This place is a blast! The drive out along the dirt road was considerably longer than I had anticipated but my rental Hyundai Elantra continued to surpass expectations and got me there. At the point I hit the trail, I had already hiked several trails along the main park road in Lassen and knew I was already approaching the point of where I would not make my flight out of SAC in a few hours.

The early part of the trail is non-descript—leaving from the parking lot, you walk through a field of knee- to waist-high grass along a thin dirt footpath until you reach the trees. Here the trail takes a slight climb. Continue through until you reach the sign pointing down the hill to Devil’s Kitchen. The kitchen itself is amazing—a meandering path beset all around with bubbling mudpots, plumes of white smoke, yellow-stained streams, and all the wonder that is Lassen.

Take your time to see all there is here in the last bit of the trail—coming up from Phoenix, I had not expected it to be 103F this day in NorCal and the sun coupled with the ambient heat of the kitchen were killer. I had to run most of the way back out at a full tilt in hopes of making my flight back to PHX. Thankfully, after a long hot run, an even longer drive, I made the very sweaty flight back to AZ.
