This hike went to the summit of Box Springs Mountain (elevation of 3,080 feet and prominence of 1,160 feet). This peak is in the Box Springs Mountain Reserve, which is a Riverside County Park.

At one time there was a lot of dense sage covering the hillsides in the park, but recent wildfires have allowed non-native grasses to thrive. It is very green there right now, and it looks like there is soon to be wildflower season.

There is an antenna farm at the summit, and the summit is reached by hiking on a nice, well graded service road. The road hardly has even a pebble on it, so it is nice to walk or bike on. The road is closed to vehicular traffic, and is restricted to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders.

Note that I did not hike on the Skyline Trail, which goes the opposite way to the summit from the parking area. I did hike on the Spring Trail on the way up to do something besides road walking.

In spite of it being a road walk in an urban park to an antenna farm, this was actually an enjoyable hike. Lilley and MacLeod hiked this one in 2000, so if it is good enough for them then its good enough for me!

It was a nice 65 degree afternoon when I did the hike, and there are some nice views of some snow capped peaks: San Gorgonio, San Jacinto, and San Antonio, aka Mount Baldy.

If I lived in the area I might hike in this park occasionally. There is no shade, so it would be hot in the summertime.

Short stop on the way to LA. This mountain has been on my to-do list for years and I finally got it, though I used a shorter, more direct route instead of coming up on Two Trees. It’s smack dab in the middle of the Inland Empire so the 360 degree views are fantastic. A bit of snow is still lingering on Baldy, Gorgonio, and Jacinto - mostly, but not exclusively on the north slopes.
Wildflower show is pretty solid right now, too.
