I'd never been in this area and the opportunity to paddle here was one I wasn't gonna turn down.

I had never even seen a photo of the catwalk to the gauging station , and that was a fun side trip, despite the signed recommendations discouraging it. It was nice to see emerald cave on a weekday, and positively comical to see 60 floaters waiting in line for hours to get a photo there on our exit day. It's mind-boggling to me what people will do for a photo. :M2C: (if you disagree, ask those people waiting in line if they would be there if they didn't have a camera). To each their own I guess. [-(

We got chased by homeland security at the dam. Apparently I'm considered a "hostile actor" and "appropriate action will be taken". Thankfully, I'm pretty good at paddling :D

I don't really do tourist attractions. Sauna cave was hot, stuffy and meh. Boyscout was insanely overcrowded. Like who enjoys this feces? The canyon and geology was nice though.

There are apparently 14 hot springs along this stretch and we found some of the others along the way and enjoyed the solitude. Go explore. You'll appreciate it. The three named ones are nice too, but only at 4am when they're not overrun with visitors. Can't complain when you're one of them though!

Apparently the mormon church does trips here with their kids. And boy scouts too. There was one beach with 60 (sixty!) canoes and their camp. Seriously WTF? Fun thing though, they weren't allowed to get in the hot springs if there were naked people in there. #winning

Favorite moment of the weekend: teenage boy asking dad-type person who had obviously given him instruction to not "look" audibly asking "what am I supposed to look at!?" to which the reply was "the wall! look at the wall!!!" poor kid. They're boobs. Your life won't end if you catch a glimpse.

Straight up pumpkin-ton of people at the beach though we camped there two nights and survived. Brought all the firewood we needed as of course there is nothing natural to burn there. Crowds and popularity not my thing, but managed to make an ok time of it. Might be a one and done for me though. Fun trip nonetheless.

This was supposed to be a 2-day trip but weather forced us to hike out early.

We hiked down to the river. Paddled upstream to check out the sauna cave and the vapor caves near gold Strike. Then paddled down to Boy Scout where we laid in the pools for a bit. Then we hiked out due to really, really bad gusts of wind. There was also a lot of people camped in Boy Scout which would not have made for good camping.

We did this route as a day trip with a large group of friends. We worked with Desert River Kayak to obtain access to the put-in at the dam. The morning started out great, but by the early afternoon, we were taking on some pretty significant headwinds. The winds picked up to 25mph, with gusts up to 40mph, according to NOAA. Despite the weather, this is a really fun trip. It would be ideal to do this as an overnight and camp on one of the sandy beaches. This would allow more time to explore the many side canyons. That being said, Boy Scout Canyon was by far the most interesting and unique place we stopped. We avoided Goldstrike Canyon because there were so several boats already parked there, and I don't like waiting in line to hike...
I did make an exception for AZ hot spring, since everyone in my group wanted to see it.

It's getting close to that time of year when humans should avoid the Colorado Main Stem. It gets rather warm, even in April. However, the dam does tend to release more water to downstream users this time of year. And the cold water is a reprieve from the relentless sun.

Awesome trip. Not sure if I will do it again anytime soon. But I will definitely look for a way to get back in Boy Scout Canyon! :D

There are many "hanging garden" style hot springs in this canyon. They drip pretty constantly. There are also a few that flow straight out of the ground, contributing to the creek's flow.

Descent from top, including 340ft (!!!) rappel. Played in the hotsprings. Headed back up the steep, steep exit route (class 3-4 scrambling required) after a quick dip in the Colorado. That exit was the payback for enjoying such a huge rappel.

Cool canyon with great hotsprings and flowing water. Hot springs are all below the huge rapel, so accessible via boat from the river.

We enjoyed an easy float/paddle trip on the Colorado River via spectacular Black Canyon over the past weekend. No prior kayaking experience was needed. We paddled/floated a relaxing 12 miles from the Hoover Dam to Willow Beach over two days. Experienced hot springs, waterfalls, sauna caves, wildlife, crystal-clear green water and to learned a bit about the history of this part of the Colorado River.

Distance: Easy, 12 miles via kayak or canoe

We were using an outfitter to obtain permits, rented the canoes and take care of the shuttling. The cost for everything, including the campground fees, was $110.

We camped on Friday evening at the Willow Beach campground. Early Saturday morning, the outfitters picked us up and shuttled us to the launch point at the base of Hoover Dam. We spent the day hiking and exploring the very fun side canyons.

Saturday evening's camp was at Arizona Hot Springs, just off the river. We enjoyed an evening campfire and hot springs.

Sunday morning we paddled (more like floated) down to Willow Beach and our waiting vehicles.

This is a 12 mile, flat water, mostly shallow section of the Colorado River, that cuts through a long and beautiful canyon with many hot springs. There is scenery with desert views, rocks, longhorn sheep, awesome colors! We stopped in a few spots to explore some cool canyons with weeping moss formations, stick our feet into hot springs, sit under a hot waterfall, and much more….

No prior canoeing or kayaking experience needed, the river was literally floating us (in most spots). Canoes hold 2 people and a lot of gear, while you can request a single kayak (much less gear though).

Temps are normally sunny, and in the 60s during the day but expect 30-40s at night.

Due to the Hoover Dam security you will need an ID, and the permit is by name.

During our Black Canyon Canoe trip we stopped to hike Boy Scout Canyon to the bottom of the big pour off. This is a pretty cool hike since the 'trailhead' is accessible from a canoe. I believe that where we were was the part that the regular trail doesn't access because of the long drop of the pour off.

There are a couple ofl technical spots in which I wished I had a rope that wasn't frayed and weathered. I also wish I had a harness and someone to belay me. However, we made do with the frayed and weather rope. It was very interesting to try to climb up while water was flowing downing.

The walls of the canyon are very high. The canyon bottom has several hot springs and a nice creek flowing down to the Colorado River. Because of the moist shade on the walls several places had nice green slime/algae build up. There were also crystals that reminded me of cave popcorn. It was really pretty.

When we got to the turnaround point of our hike I was surprised to not find any water. All the hot springs were downstream. Instead there was a flat spot below the big pour off. I liked the looks of the mud lining the main spout. You'll be able to see that when I post my pictures.

Nice full body workout for such a short hike :)
