The trail head alongside the road is marked. The trail heads up to a saddle about 500 feet up and overlooks Tesuque Creek. The trail continues on down to the creek but we turned around at the saddle. The Chamisa trail has two distinct routes up to the saddle, one follows higher up along the east side of the creek, the other follows the creek bottom. The one along the creek is a bit steeper. We took the creek trail back. After hiking in the aspen forest higher up this trail seemed a little blah but it actually isn’t. Some very nice stands of ponderosa, the views at the saddle overlooking Tesuque Creek aren’t too great because of the trees. Continuing from the saddle down to Tesuque Creek would lead you to the Winsor trail 1.5 miles further. We didn’t have time for that part of the trail. The trail is in great condition and we didn’t see anyone on the trail, we finished around 6:30. I was kind of hoping the road construction crew would have gone home by this time so we wouldn’t have to wait for the pilot car, no such luck, they were working late to make up the lost time from last week’s rain. |
