The wildflowers were also sublime with all of the usual suspects plus a few ones I didn't recognize. I'll know more when I get everything downloaded.
The first and second mile were a brisk ascent on a dirt road up from Hwy. 1, and that was fine. The third mile was on an overgrown, but passable trail. A trail this overgrown in the Mazatzals would skin someone alive, but California brush is nice and soft. Unfortunately it's also full of poison oak just like this one. The last mile to the Coast Ridge Road just blasted me with short and steep switchbacks.
I was proud of overcoming the challenge of the final mile up to the remote road, but I couldn't stop to enjoy a snack because I was swarmed with insects. I got the impression that they were primarily interested in my sweat, which I get because I'm kind of a big deal, but I was really looking forward to some chow after that butt-kicker.
I walked a bit on the Coast Ridge Road in both directions from the junction with the trail, and the terrain up there seems to be a mix of scorched and weedy post-fire colonizers. I was really hoping to see some Santa Lucia fir (abies bracteata), but none were evident even in the distance. However, this stretch of road has a fantastic view of Ventana Double Cone, Ventana Cone and South Ventana Cone. Truly epic country out there that will hopefully be explored in future adventures. |
