| no partners | | This was my first day in the Sierras and the elevation took it's toll. I pushed off from the Rock Creek Trailhead at 10:25 with the temperature at a brisk 58 degrees. My plan was to circumvent Dorothy Lake and return on that un-named trail heading north so as to make a loop out of this. The climb was nice and steady and I lost all of the crowds by the time I made the turnoff at the Sandy Wash Trail at the 1.0 mile mark, (ie: my return route.) This 475 climb took me about 30 minutes. The rest of the climb to Dorothy Lake was more gradual. I ran into a couple of rangers performing trail work and they informed me that the loop I was seeking to do was there and relatively easy to follow. But when I reached a large meadow near my northern turnaround the trail just disappeared. I managed to find a game trail that was heading back the correct heading and it eventually hooked up with the well defined Sandy Wash Trail and back home. I just cut the corner in the meadow a little early is all. The entire trip came in at 6.4 miles with 890 feet of AEG in 3 hours and 5 minutes. |
