Back at the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Preserve. Planned fell through. Wanted to the Wiashal Trail. It's a trail that, based on maps, gets the most elevation in the preserve going from the top of the plateau down to the valley. Today, like in July, this trail was closed for "maintenance". I beginning to think that this is closed more for ecological reasons than anything else.

With my initial hike shot down, I was pressed for an alternate hike. I was hiking with a friend of the family and didn't want to drive elsewhere. Luckily, there are many different short trails that gave me all kinds of options. Starting from the visitor center, we took Granite Loop Trail to the Vista Grande Trails. Both these trails I had done before, but they got me into the park and led to new trails. The new trails actually were made up of dirt roads. The first being the Waterline Rd. Up to this point there had been negligible elevation gain. From the Waterline, we did Monument Hill Rd. The elevation was very mild but had me huffing by the time we got to the top (we were jogging these trails). At the top of the hill we met a couple of other joggers, both from out of state. One was a young college man from Michigan and the other was a man in his seventies from New York. We talked a little then jogged back to car via the Lomas Trail and the Tenaja Truck Rd.

Nice day for a jog. Temps in the 50's. Saw quite a few hikers as we headed back toward the visitor center. I saw a few squirrels but that was it.
