Day trip to Great Sand Dunes National Park. Highest dunes in North America, rising 800+ feet above the surrounding valley, and at an elevation of up to 9,000 feet.

Great time of year to visit. Medano Creek was flowing. Weather was such that the sand didn't get hot and it was comfortable hiking in bare feet all day. We rented sand sleds and a sand board. My experiment on the sand board resulted in a sore tail bone and a tweaked shoulder that may or may not require some medical attention. So, we eventually just stuck to the sand sleds, which were quite fun!

Made it up to High Dune and sledded our way back.

Hiking to the high dune is probably one of my favorite hikes on this trip; second only to the ride in the combine I had earlier on this trip. This is a grueling 3 mile round trip up a 600 foot sand dune. I think it compares to the Incline at Colorado Springs except easier on knee joints. The views all along this trail are spectacular, Blanca Peak (14400) to the Southeast and the Sangre De Cristo Mountains to the North and East. The wind was blowing pretty good as we approached the peak, previous tracks were covered up pretty fast. Coming down was easy, just head down hill toward the start point. This hike is a bit easier if you do it just after a rain, the sand is a little more packed. The Great Sand Dune National Park is up there in the top 5 parks I have been to, It is really different and not a lot of people.

I knew the sand would be soft and slow, so I didn't plan to go to the top. After getting past where most people quit, the footing was much firmer, so I went for it anyway.

The posted track is my return route, which was almost exclusively on dune crests, which made the easiest going. However, they were also a bit scary since they were so narrow and bordered some vast holes.

I'll try to get some pics off my phone.
