| partners | | We spent 4 days backpacking in the High Uintas Wilderness in Utah. Lots of alpine lakes and cool temps to enjoy. We started from the Swift Creek trailhead on the south side of the range.
Day 1 the plan was to camp in the Milk Lake area as jump off point to Kings Peak ascent. However, I had some altitude sickness on the first day at 11,000 feet so we didn’t make Milk Lake. Kind of weird since I’ve hiked 14’ers before with no issues. I was man down that night but fully recovered within 24 hours so we decided to change the plan a bit.
Day 2 we hiked over Bluebell Pass to see the Milk Lake side but still took it easy with the elevation. Great views from the pass and the backbone of the Uinta range. After a lunch break we headed back over Bluebell Pass and back to camp. Camp was at a lake marked 10,919 on the topo one of the many lakes in the basin. In the afternoon we hiked over to Farmers Lake and explored the area. Farmers is a large lake and one of the more scenic, so we found some nice spots to relax before heading back to camp.
Day 3 we moved camp to Timothy Lakes Basin about 2 miles away from the Farmers Lake side. Dropped packs at East Timothy Lake and checked out some nearby lakes for possible camp spot. After about 1 hour we found really cool camp at Center Timothy Lake for the last night. We setup camp and then went out for day hike of the Timothy Lakes Basin area. Starting from East Timothy Lake we did about 6 mile loop to Lower Carroll Lake, Upper Carroll Lake and near the top of the basin below the main ridge. Then we dropped down to West Timothy Lake and finally back to Center Timothy and our camp. This was a great loop and really hit the highlights of Timothy Lakes Basin.
Day 4 after another relaxing camp we packed up and headed out. It’s about 10 miles from Timothy Basin out to Swift Creek trailhead. A few thunderstorms rolled in the last few miles but never had more than a few sprinkles. Aside from a brief rainstorm on Day 1 and the last day we had really good weather. The mosquitos were not too crazy, but we were very glad to have mosquito head nets. Also, we only ran into 10 people in 4 days…6 backpackers, 2 fisherman and 2 day hikers near the trailhead. So much to see in the Unitas Wilderness and we really only explored relatively small section. Definitely on the short list for a return trip! |
