Took Noah on a couple hikes to check out fall colors today. We did not have enough time to do all of Dome Rock so we went clockwise through the aspen forest. Later we drive up the 67 and hiked to Horsethief falls for a total of about 8 miles. There are prime areas and large swaths at Dome Rock that need a week. I’ll be back to trail run Dome Rock when I don’t have Noah next week. Made it back in time to do cross country with Micah after school. Meet and lacrosse game same time so she will not be running at this meet. :( The life of a stay at home sport Dad until I get released for work.

Planned this hike last week, but didn't have enough time and did the Crags instead. This hike is mostly offtrail starting at Horsethief falls trailhead. I skipped sentinel point until the return since I had to traverse part way up Sentinel point to make the loop. I ran into two campers on the ring to peak in the am and two people summiting behind me from the Crags with their dogs. There wasn't even 15 people in the shop up top. I planned to take a ridgeline to the Crags trail, but realized it wouldn't work so I then decided to drop into the massive canyon and go up the other side adding AEG, but reducing miles and the trail along the toll road. This hike has it all 2 summits, mines, high alpine tundra, waterfalls, and even more than the pumpkin loop this let's you see the scale of how big this mountain is while making it more of a wilderness experience. I did not map or route scout this I just winged it, but it turned out to be an enjoyable hike with no major surprises except how PUMPKIN cold it was at the top.

Decided after dome rock and looking at Sentinel Point all day that I was going to do this as a second hike today since it is only a 10 min. drive to the trailhead. I did this hike in January and had planned on getting back to it. Hike was good and took basically same route. The exposed rock on the way up to the ridgeline looks more menacing w/out snow. At the snow level 10,500' I put on waterproof socks and gloves. Before the summit it was so cold and windy that the primaloft jacket and hat came out as well as the zip on pant legs. I didn't spend much time on top and the route down was basically following the fall line until I hit the horsethief falls trail right above the falls. I followed footprints in the snow last time, but doing it as a loop I would recommend clockwise as finding a route up past the falls would suck. No cairns or trails. The clockwise route is cairned and relatively easy to follow.

Impromptu hike with Micah and Muesli. In researching the Tunnel from my Fall Colorado photoset I found a family friendly hike. It links up with the Ring the Peak trail in a spot I hadn't done and I haven't hiked as much in this area. Micah is becoming quite the hiker probably walking a mile of the hike. I carried the extra 23 lbs. the rest of the way. I did mistakingly leave her blanket Dottie at home which made for an unhappy toddler on the last 1/4 mile and in the car until she went to sleep. :o There were some icy sections and the falls were cool although the lighting was lame. She also learned the word graupel today as we were pelted for over half the hike. This trail also links up to Sentinel Peak and Pancake Rocks for longer mile hikes in the area. This was just about right for the circumstances. Or maybe 1/4 of a mile long since I left Dottie. :sl:
The overnight snow, cold temps. forecasted 27 F at Sunrise and 19 mph winds have changed my early morning long hike from Manitou via Elk Run and Oil Creek Tunnel home to another time.
A couple of short videos of my future hazer in action. :D
