There is also a Hosp Grove Loop in HAZ, but in my mind the Hosp Grove Trail System is an indecipherable mess…loops and hikes can be created at the hikers discretion. There are 2 designated systems that make up the Hosp trails: an East Grove and a West Hosp Grove. These systems can be easily connected but are separated by Monroe St., a major thoroughfare. None of the official trails are named, but there are colored arrows (red, green, blue, yellow) to try to distinguish the trails. They failed for various reasons. ( There were trails that were blue going one way (north), but yellow going south Then there were trails that had colored arrows pointing one direction but intersections were unmarked so there was no clarity which way to go for that colored arrow. This problem was compounded by the fact that for every official trail there were 2 user trail crisscrossing the landscape).
This didn’t impact me too much as I was trying to grid as many of the trails as I could in this area. Got to the West Grove TH around 5:30am. Took the first trail I could, which was heading east. This actually took me across Monroe St. to the East Grove system. Fine. Starting by going west to east and work my way south. Hit most of the trails in the area, official and user. There were a few transients camped in the area that I hiked around. Otherwise, feel pretty good about gridding the area. Did all of the east side, but didn’t touch the west. There was some strange wet stuff falling from the sky. Nice, but weird. Like to see more of it. |
