This was a hike to James Peak (elevation of 13,271 feet), the highpoint of Gilpin County. This was an out-and-back hike starting and ending at Loch Lomand.

The last 2 miles of the road getting to Lock Lomand was pretty rough -- I was mostly driving 2-5 mph. There were mostly high clearance trucks at the TH, although I was amazed to see an Outback that had made the drive.

From where I parked, I took a portion of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) all the way to the summit of James Peak. The trail was a little tricky to follow until I got to the treeline, which is about 400-500 vertical feet above Loch Lomand. Once at the treeline, the trail was easy to follow the rest of the way. Just before the summit, I think that the trail merged with the James Peak Summit Trail that comes in from near St. Mary's Glacier.

Loch Lomand is a man-made lake, and there are a series of lakes above it. All of these lakes get water from snow melt, and I could see water running down from the mountains above into Loch Lomand.

This was an enjoyable class 1 hike -- once above the treeline the trail went through tundra, and there were great views of the surrounding mountains along with some lakes.

I probably saw 4-5 people on the trails, 2 of which were at the summit when I was there. I didn't have the place to myself, but it certainly wasn't overcrowded either.

Day 2 of 5. Woke up with a bit of a headache. Decided to grab St. Mary's Glacier. The hike out to St. Mary's is VERY popular but we arrived early on a weekday and shared the views with 3 or 4 other hikers. The lake is shadowed by Fox mountain that is just shy of 11,000 ft. The large section of ice just north of the lake is St. Mary's Glacier. You could have used microspikes but we just made our way up the glacier without them.

My headache had passed and we decided to keep heading north. A large mountain appeared after the glacier that looked promising. We ran into a local who was doing James Peak and we decided to switch up the gameplan.

This turned out to be an excellent decision. Further north offered incredible views of Lake Caroline, Ohman Lake, Stewart Lake, Loch Lomand, and "Ice Lake". James Peak (the high point of James Peak Wilderness) offered ridiculous views in all directions and ended up being the 2nd best hike of the trip.

Strongly recommend.

On the way back to the car, St. Mary's was packed with all sorts of people. Must have been 300 - 400 people.

Get there early and miss the zoo.

This was a 4 part hike. From the trail head I carried my snowshoes on my back until I reached St. Mary's Glacier. Strapped on the Snowshoes and headed up the glacier. This is one of the steepest parts of the climb. Once I reached the top of the glacier, I took the snowshoes off and headed across the relatively flat plain for about 2 miles. Once I reached the base of James Peak I strapped the snowshoes back on and headed up the peak. The last 100 feet of this climb was really steep and I had to kick the toes of my snowshoes into the snow. The view on top was amazing. The mountains between James peak and South Arapaho peak are all less than 13,000 feet. James Peak looms over 1,000 feet higher than most of these mountains.
The walk down the mountain was fast and fun.
