Crested Butte is an amazing area and maybe one of my new favorite areas in Colorado, in terms of setting and surrounding scenery. The hike was short and straightforward with a nice destination at the end. My miles reflect some scrambling to see the waterfalls, but most people will be satisfied with ending at the nice little overlook with a bench. The trail is an old road and large path for the majority of the hike and only becomes a single track for the final few tenths of a mile. There is an upper trailhead and a lower trailhead. The upper trailhead will save you a half mile, but is a little tougher and requires a little more clearance. We parked the rental vans at the lower trailhead.
A short but sweet hike with a worthy destination and the boys loved it. I did my part to convey some wilderness values upon them as well and used carved up aspens as a teaching point about what not to do on trails and corrected a couple of boys that were going to leave some spilled goldfish on the ground at the waterfall viewing point.
I will write a little description up for the trail and attach an official route when I get to a PC. Posted more pics than needed, but wanted to preserve the special moment a little more for myself. It really is a great feeling to introduce the outdoors to a group of kids who don’t make it out of the valley much. |
