@toddak said this hike was awesome and he was not kidding!

parked at manzanita trailhead and walked the road up to italianos canyon. steep canyon ascent killed me but the pain was mitigated by wonderful running creek lined with pines, flowers and aspen! also little meadows up high and mushrooms galore!

the views from Lobo peak are simply outstanding

steep leg down manzanita canyon with numerous water crossings and tons of shade.

very worthwhile hike in the taos area :y:

Counter-clockwise loop up Italianos Canyon #59 to the ridge, up Lobo Peak #57 and down Manzanita Canyon #58, road walk back to the car. Most of the hike is in beautiful lush forest, but the peak itself is just above treeline for excellent 360-degree views. Wonderful!

There are four roughly parallel trails in this area that climb from Highway 150 to the ridgeline, but the trailheads aren't particularly well signed. They are located at the following approximate mile marks:
Yerba Canyon 10.2
Manzanita 11.0
Italianos 12.0
Gavilan 12.9

Hank and I did this hike as a loop going up Manzanita Canyon to Lobo Peak then hiking 1.7 miles on the ridgeline (Gold Hill trail) to Italianos Canyon and back down to the road (SR150) for a 1 mile walk back to the car.

I can't say enough about this hike. We all have different preferences but this was my favorite hike during our stay in Taos. At the lower elevations there were roaring streams and dense jungle like vegetation I was not expecting. The vegetation thinned as we made the steep climb toward Lobo Peak. Across the ridgeline was mainly forest and great views. We were above tree line for only about 1/4th mile before to 1/4th mile past Lobo Peak. Views from Lobo were amazing. Descending Italianos was just as great. More mushrooms on this hike than I have seen anywhere at any time. I would call this the hike of a thousand mushrooms.

If you find yourself in Taos do this one. It is quite strenuous measuring 11 miles and about 4,000 feet AEG.

Of my seven days with six day hikes (from 8/14 to 8/21/10) while visiting Carson NF- "Wheeler Peak Wilderness" with a base camp out of the Taos, NM- upper Ski Village, this Lobo Peak LOOP HIKE was my most enjoyable and memorable. Just a beautiful area to hike with many amenities along the way to keep your attention, including Lobo Peak Summit with its 360 degree views at 12,115 feet.

I did get a little carried-away with posting 60 pics on this one, but my new interest in the science of mycology and this NM hiking area being a mushroom heaven in August, I just couldn't resist the temptation to capture them all in some beautiful settings too.. :D
