Today was a day for plan B. Glacier Point Road was closed due to the fire crews staging there. We hit a some easier stuff in the valley instead. This was the most smoke haze we had seen so far. The morning Views of the Yosemite Valley were bad. Other views we got to see like the falls and such were not as bad. For sure better then the pics let on... It was nice to see some of the Yosemite Valley landmarks for the first time. We noticed the smoke easing up and gave Tunnel View another chance before sunset at it was a lot better. It was nice to look around in the valley and take it a little easier before tomorrows bigger hike.

we packed up our camp at crane flat early and hit the road into yosemite valley
parked at the tunnel and hiked up to inspiration point on the pohono trail
extremely smoky this day, limiting views
a good hike anyway
next hit the very short trail to bridal veil fall
still flowing due to abundance of snow this year
made one stop across from el capitan and walked down to the river
we saw a doe with two fawns and a very nice view of el cap
parked at yosemite valley lodge where we would be staying the next two nights
did the easy loop to lower yosemite fall, also flowing well
jumped on the shuttle to mirror lake trailhead
there were a lot of gnats on this hike but we did the full loop anyway
back on the shuttle for lunch at the grill in the village, then checked into the lodge
ended up going back out to tunnel view close to sunset
photo ops were much better with less smoke
fun day doing most of the easy valley hikes
totally touristy for our first visit to the park
this was kind of a plan b since glacier point road was closed due to fire

No water in the falls. Tall trees. Lots of people.

Sat next to falls viewing area on a bench and watch rock climbers scaling wall through binoculars. Cheering when they got to the top - listening to all the people in different languages in shock/awe tracking the little specks of climbers. Huge French contingent - - exciting to use that rarely used high school skill to translate for Brad.

Went to lavish dinner at the fancy hotel and had drinks outside at sunset (@azchumley's advice) - he should be a romance concierge for outdorsy-people. But since I was the one planning things - not as romantic in real life - but as the controlling force in marriage - it's just the way things work. I plan - he follows and pays - everyone is happy.

Since our home base was Mariposa - we brought extra clothes and deodorant. Parked near Ahwahnee Hotel right after lunch - that was smart. Tiny nap in the car then walked to Lower Falls - walked back to car - changed clothes - deodorant shower - brushed hair - heels/purse/eyeliner - and went in for dinner #likeAboss. Somehow we got back to Mariposa.

Lower Yosemite Fall is pretty nice, you can also get a view of both upper and lower at once here. Be warned that this is a paved trail, and near Yosemite Village so pretty much everyone who has entered the park that day will be at this trail. It was crowded. You still get some awesome views though. If you visit Yosemite, you need to check it out.

Did this short hike as an easy, evening stroll. The hike has the feel of walking through a huge city park (e.g., Central Park), with a broad, tree-lined, paved trail, raised footbridges over areas where spring run-off floods the area, and pull-out areas along the way with interpretive signs, etc.

We were very lucky that there was any water over the falls at this time of year. In fact, the rangers told us that the falls were dry the prior week, but that some heavy rains "revived" the falls temporarily. Glad we got to see it running. Also got a nice photo of the sun setting on Half Dome as we returned to the trailhead.

Afterwards, we drove down the road a bit to El Capitan, and sat in our camp chairs in the field next to the road and watched the a group of climbers scaling the cliff as the sun set.

Saying this is a beautiful area is an understatement.

Day 1:
The long friday afternoon drive up to Yosemite was just too slow due to traffic around San Bernardino and we didnt arrive at the park until past 3AM saturday morning. Dragging the following day and losing time getting our backcountry permits didnt allow us to start hiking until past 10AM saturday at Lower Yosemite Falls TH.
The climb up the canyon was challenging with a full backpack but made it to the rim in less than 2 hours, we then proceeded to Snow Creek Trail for another 5 miles to Snow Creek for the night. Along the way we had great views of Half Dome, a guy having some fun with his girlfriend near Yosemite Creek, encountered several tame and unshy deer who if i wanted to i could reach out and touch. We also saw a bear about 150-200 feet away from us, it was the only sighting the entire weekend but it made our day!.
At around 6PM we reached our planned camping spot near Snow Creek where we quickly set up camp and the abundance of downed wood made starting a bonfire a breeze.

Day 2:
After a pretty challenging day 1 we thought we would have a rather "easy" 16 mile day but it wasnt the case. It turned out to be a 10 hour, close to 5000 AEG day with several creek crossings, a couple 1000+ foot climbs with one being on a snow field with a lot of melting snow.
We started our day at around 9AM and planned to have lunch at Tenaya lake at about our half way point. The lake was striking with really singular granite mountains all around BUT it was infested with mosquitoes and unwisely we took our time eating and giving our flying friends an unlimited amount of DEET.
We then reluctantly restarted the second half of the hike heading to Clouds Rest, the hike there was pretty uneventful but we got to play in the snow on our way up to the summit. On the way down we encountered plenty of muddy areas. We set up camp just after we joined the JMT and just after sunset. We had a pretty quiet night at this great and hidden area away from the trail. During the night i was woken up by what seemed to be a large animal sniffing around my tent. I decided not to move and act as if it was nothing, the following morning one of our bear canisters misteriously moved about 100 feet from its original spot and someones backpack had been searched by a bear with only a minor tear on one of the pockets.

Day 3:
The last day was the easiest and quickest of the three with virtually no uphill climbs, it was all JMT all the way down to Yosemite Valley passing by the Half Dome trail fork then further down reaching Nevada Falls which were absolutely spectacular! The area was a zoo with people everwhere along the trail and the waterfall viewpoints. We reached Yosemite Valley just before 1230PM.

In all i was completely blown away by this National Park and despite having to drive 12 hours each way it was well worth trip.

While staying in Yosemite Valley, we took the bus over to the Village Store and made our way to Lower Yosemite Falls. You follow a paved trail through the trees that leads to a bridge below the lower falls. The waterfall was flowing lite so people were able to work their way right up to the bottom of the falls. We took our pics from the bridge area and then returned to the road where we picked up the village bus and returned to Curry Village.

Just one of the obligatory visits everybody must make during their first visit to Yosemite. This is a flip-flop, drinking-a-beer kind of stroll with occasional crowds depending on when you're there.

Let me just call shenanigans on whoever decided this is the tallest fall in North America. Clearly it's NOT one fall, and therefore should not be counted as one fall. Under this logic, why not add up Nevada and Vernal into the same fall too?

Anyway, rumor has it this will slow to a trickle by the end of summer, so spring is the best time to see it flowing nicely. The wind off the face made it seem as though there were times when the water didn't ever come down, reduced to clouds of mist.

Worth the visit, but I think these falls look cooler from a distance from various points across Yosemite Valley.

Photo hike ....This is so different than the gushing falls of spring! you could hear huge chunks of ice come peeling off the walls as the sun warmed them up! Rainbow is not that strong in winter. Icy all the way ....

Backlogged Trip Report.

After exploring Mono Lake we headed into Yosemite. Picked up my first hitchiker ever- Paul. He had been backpacking a section of the PCT and had to bail due to injuries. We dropped him off at his truck, then continued to drive through the park to Yosemite Valley.

Michelle had never been to Yosemite, so we took our time hitting all the viewpoints, then took a short stroll to the falls.

Spectacular site to behold! The Falls were roaring after a heavy winter snow. This trail provides several good vantage points of the Lower & Upper Falls. Anyone can do this as the entire trail is paved. Put this on the must do list as long as the Falls are flowing.
