Day 1

Drove up to Grandview Campground (8500') to snag a site, then headed to the visitor center for this loop. The trees are super cool and you get some good views of Deep Springs Lake and the Inyo Mountains.

I figured a 4 mile hike with <1000ft of gain would be a piece of cake but I had nothing left at the end. Annihilated some potato chips and jerky back at the car and headed back to camp without hiking the Discovery Loop - will be back for it one day.

Hiked this interesting area with Brian on the drive back from Mt Whitney area. We saw many ancient bristlecone pines that were as old as 4,700 years. The trail had a lot of up and down and felt like much more than 800 feet of AEG.

After Boundary Peak I had my sights set on White Mt Peak, so I headed down here and hiked this in the afternoon after I arrived. Crowded, as was the entire area including Bishop and the Owens Valley, which was also smoke filled, or choked really. With the smokey conditions and the coming wind forecast due to a cold front moving south, I skipped White Mountain Peak, and headed back towards Great Basin NP, instead. Enjoyable and scenic hike, lots of Bristlecone Pine, but I felt I had a better Bristlecone experience on my hike to Charleston Peak last month. Go figure. Still, it was relaxing and scenic, and the views were informational. Besides, I finally got here, even if I still skipped White Mountain Peak. It isn't going anywhere! My only regret, is skipping the drive up to the Schulmann grove, but I expected to do that the next day after the peak. Oh, well.

End of our long weekend doing high points but we still wanted to see the Ancient Bristlecone Forest so we stopped at Shulman Grove to do the short 4.5 mile Methuselah Loop Trail. There is a visitors center which was closed but they had some literature available that we took on the interpretive trail. Along the way there are markers that tell you all the fun facts about the Bristlecone Forest. Very cool loop with excellent views and Bristlecone's galore of all shapes and sizes. We took our time reading at each marker giving the scenery more time to sink in. Only about 900 feet AEG so nothing too strenuous and the trail was great by any standards. It was still early so only saw 3 other people on the trail before the crowds showed as we were leaving. Too bad we had to drive back to Phx and 118...yikes

Cool trail through the Bristlecone Pines. You get a map on the 27 stops, and at each stop you can read a little history or learn a new fact.
