The views from the summit of Mount Elwell were outstanding. This loop hike is best done counterclockwise as we did it because it's a gentler way to the top.
We found the summit register inside a PVC tube, but it was full so I left my notepad to start a new register. The portion of the hike headed north/clockwise down from the summit is pretty steep, and we saw some mountain bikers doing the hike-and-bike thing going the opposite direction. Mainly the hiking part. These poor souls were hauling their bikes up to the top of Mount Elwell for what admittedly looks like a cool ride down north from the summit, but it looked like a painful way to go. I saw some tracks on the 6 o'clock to 3 o'clock portion of the counterclockwise loop that indicated these mountain bikers also tried to ride up a fairly rough, rocky portion of the trail with a lot of step-ups. |
