Spent the day doing some hiking in Topanga State Park. started off with parker mesa overlook. basically some nice and mellow fire roads offering great mountain and canyon views of the interior of the santa monica mountains, then ending at a pretty dramatic viewpoint of the coast and downtown LA.

weather was perfect and not very crowded. nice park. lot of trail and route options!

Afternoon hike to the overlook. It was cool and foggy at the trailhead, but once at the East Topanga Fire Road the trail was above the marine layer and hot and sunny. This time I took a couple of the side-trails that parallel the fire road to make it feel more like hiking on a trail and less like walking on a road. At the top of the first plateau someone had made two circles of twigs, leaves and even a dead lizard. I left it undisturbed in case it was some sort of offering to some demonic being. From the overlook the coast and ocean were all hidden under the marine layer. On the way back I stopped to rest and saw smoke from a brush fire to the North. As I continued down there was more and smoke. Getting back to a TV I saw local news covering brush fires in Calabassas.

Started at Los Liones trailhead reasonably early while there was still plenty of parking a few hundred yards before the official trailhead. You start on the Los Liones Canyon trail which is a nice trail with trees providing a shade canopy along most of the way. It takes you up the canyon for about a mile, and then heads Eastward for another half mile to a nice overlook with a bench where Los Liones Canyon trail ends at the Paseo Miramar trail.

Paseo Mirimar trail is really a fire road. Reasonably smooth for a dirt road and very wide it heads up the ridge line gaining about 800 feet of elevation in a mile which is only a little more than the Los Liones Canyon trail, but it feels like a lot more because you're walking in the sun and you can see it going up and up for a long way ahead. After what seems like forever the trail stops climbing and the rest of the way is easy with just short ups and downs. The Paseo Miramar trail becomes a regular trail branching off to the left as the main road becomes the E. Topanga Fire Road which continues off to the North toward Trippet Ranch. I was pleasantly surprised to see trash and recycle cans at the junction. Paseo Mirimar ends up at the Parker Mesa Overlook about a half mile after the junction.

The view from the overlook is spectacular. Unfortunately when I went it was quite hazy, but even so the panoramic view was pretty amazing. The skyscrapers of downtown LA were just visible through the haze as was the Palos Verdes peninsula. Well worth the walk! I'll definitely do this one again.

Not to many flowers in the canyon, but once up on the ridge there were extensive areas covered in yellow and orange blossoms.
