After spending a night at the Rocket Inn in Truth or Consequences, I headed north along scenic routes on my way to two nights in Las Vegas. I like to get off the interstates whenever possible; life in the fast lane does not appeal to me. Highway 55 north from Mountainair, along the east side of the Manzano Mountains, has long been a favorite drive. A stop at Quarai is one of the rewards. Of the three units comprising this national monument, this is my favorite. I have stopped here a number of times over the years and enjoy the loop trail, going counterclockwise. Beautiful setting.

From Quarai it was northbound, and whereas I usually take Highway 55 over to Estancia and then Highway 41 up through Moriarty to Lamy and I-25, this time I wanted to enjoy a drive on the Turquoise Trail (NM 14). So, it was up NM 337 instead to Tijeras where I picked up NM 14. Yet another great scenic drive. |
