Thanks to @chumley and others for the motivation to go make some tracks. The dirt road to the actual trailhead is closed in the winter and it makes a perfect shoeshoe route starting from the Caltrans Caples Lake Maintenance Station just off Highway 88. From the trailhead I continued up to the ridge for the views into Tahoe basin, then returned. Been 5 or 6 days since the last big storm, still good powder but starting to densify, around 4" typical step sink.

Another fine day wandering around this very scenic area, anchored by the PCT and looping with several secondary trails and some easy off-trail over Little Round Top mountain. Road in to Schneider Camp trailhead is a little rough in spots but should be doable without high clearance. Lots of wildflowers, still light flows in many drainages, Showers Lake is sweet.
