About six months ago I went up to Cheyenne, Wyoming. It was a work-related trip mired by bad weather, but I managed to sneak in a few hikes. Horsetooth Falls in Colorado was the first one.

On the drive between Denver International Airport and Cheyenne I hooked a left and detoured west out of Fort Collins. I really wanted to hike to the top of Horsetooth Mountain, aka the mountain in the Fat Tire logo. However, the sky was growing increasingly overcast on my drive up from Denver. The forecast was calling for snow, Old Man Winter's last hurrah before retiring for the season. When I stepped out of the car a light rain started falling. I reexamined my options and decided on a short out-and-back to the falls. The falls are very scenic and must make a nice getaway for the residents of Fort Collins. Unfortunately, I couldn't stay long. I wanted to be in Cheyenne before the snow started coming down.

The weather only got worse the further north I drove. By the time I reached the Wyoming state line, the light rain turned into a heavy downpour. I stopped for dinner in Cheyenne. When I left the restaurant a light dusting of snow had already accumulated on the windshield of my rented Fiat. I drove to the hotel I was booked at and settled in for a good night's rest.

The next morning I woke up at 6AM. I looked out the window and couldn't believe my eyes. A foot of fresh snow on May 1st! My poor Fiat was buried in white powder. To make matters worse, neither the hotel parking lot nor the roads were plowed. I ended up hitchhiking to work my first day on the job site. It was a memorable start to a trip that saw a little bit of good (getting to place Wyoming and Nebraska on my Visited States List) and a fair share of bad (suffering my first broken bone).
