Hmm, Sombrero Peak is just there above me and the book made that also sound like a cool peak to summit. 
Hit a Gu and slowly scrambled up to the Sombrero Peak palm grove. I was running low on hiking shirts and it was a rather warm day, so I went shirtless so I wouldn't sweat up my only remaining shirt the the chilly late afternoon descent. 
I was already more than halfway up but the slope was at least 45*, so hit another Gu and kept pushing up a semi-direct route to the eastern ridge. Once on the ridge, I found the route and followed it up to the bouldery peak. Wow, such an amazing view of this rugged beautiful desert! 
It was a little breezy up there, so I didn't hang out too long, threw on my only dry shirt, decided I didn't want to descend the way I came up, and ran down the route down the NE side of the peak. Running down these sandy slopes is fairly quick as long as you dodge the occasional rock or cactus. 
I made fairly good time down to the jeep road and just then some cool couple from Riverside rolls up in a red supped-up 67 VW Bug and offer me a ride to my car. She asked if I was hiking solo, I look around in a circle, and jokingly say: 'I think so..." 
What a great way to end an amazing adventurous holiday weekend.
