Day 3

The trailhead for St Mary's Pass is not officially signed - RouteScout saves the day once again.

This approach is straightforward: The first section is straight up to a saddle on a well-defined trail - no switchbacks necessary. From here, a good social trail heads east for about .2mi before ending at a clearing with Sonora Peak looming 900ft overhead. Head cross-country roughly .35mi NE before reaching a second social trail. This second trail is steep, gravely, and slippery - after half a mile on this section, you'll reach Sonora Peak.

I tried my best to tread lightly through the cross-country section - it's covered in flowers and animal burrows, smelled great. The second section of social trail is well-defined but slowed my pace significantly. Up top, the views include Leavitt Peak to the south, Mount Patterson to the east, and Carson Range to the north. To the west, a smoke plume from the Tiger Fire seemed to be shrinking ever so slightly - looks like it's 50% contained and only 118 acres as of 8/12.

Fun peak. Short and sweet. The drive up 108 from 395 ain't bad either.
