Excellent loop hike from Tunnel View: up Pohono then east along the rim, down Four Mile and back on Valley Loop trails, checking off 9 vista points along the way. Great views and water everywhere.

glacier point road had been closed for the ferguson fire, just opening back up august 30th
we had wanted to come up here last year - another fire closure
dewey point is accessed via the pohono trail, which runs from tunnel view below to glacier point
an easier route is to start at mcgurk meadow and link up with the pohono trail for an eight mile out and back
quite chilly when we started around 7:45
frost was visible on the grass in the meadows and on a wooden bridge over a small creek
the mcgurk trail passes through alternating forest and meadow, with a few grassy sections
very moderate elevation change
an enjoyable stroll through a pretty mixed pine forest
met up with the pohono trail in just under two miles, heading west to dewey point
a couple of gradual ascents as we got closer to the edge
nice open area at dewey point, with wonderful views of el cap, half dome, clouds rest and yosemite valley
again spent some time checking out the area and taking photos
it would have been fun to go further west to crocker and stanford points, but we had more to do from glacier point road
retraced our route back to mcgurk meadow
temps warmed up nicely
saw no one until within a mile or two of the trailhead
nice to have dewey point to ourselves

We started this hike from the McGurk Meadow trailhead. From there we hiked out to Dewey Point and back.If we are just talking about the trail and not including destination, this may be my favorite trail of this years Yosemite trip. Mild up and downs, meadows(with frost),frosty little bridge, plenty of trees, Lots of small and huge pine cones and some good views at Dewey point. You also get to see Jack McGurk's old cabin (Pre 1900) which was cool. With the old Cabin and mine at Gaylor Lakes and now this cabin it turned out to be some interesting history of the area. We also had the trail to ourselves until half way back from Dewey Point :y: . Very enjoyable start to our Glacier Point Road adventures for the day. Later on in the day we would see a BEAR in the same area :o . Possible eating on a Deer. Maybe roadkill...? Great Morning :D !

we packed up our camp at crane flat early and hit the road into yosemite valley
parked at the tunnel and hiked up to inspiration point on the pohono trail
extremely smoky this day, limiting views
a good hike anyway
next hit the very short trail to bridal veil fall
still flowing due to abundance of snow this year
made one stop across from el capitan and walked down to the river
we saw a doe with two fawns and a very nice view of el cap
parked at yosemite valley lodge where we would be staying the next two nights
did the easy loop to lower yosemite fall, also flowing well
jumped on the shuttle to mirror lake trailhead
there were a lot of gnats on this hike but we did the full loop anyway
back on the shuttle for lunch at the grill in the village, then checked into the lodge
ended up going back out to tunnel view close to sunset
photo ops were much better with less smoke
fun day doing most of the easy valley hikes
totally touristy for our first visit to the park
this was kind of a plan b since glacier point road was closed due to fire

Today was a day for plan B. Glacier Point Road was closed due to the fire crews staging there. We hit a some easier stuff in the valley instead. This was the most smoke haze we had seen so far. The morning Views of the Yosemite Valley were bad. Other views we got to see like the falls and such were not as bad. For sure better then the pics let on... It was nice to see some of the Yosemite Valley landmarks for the first time. We noticed the smoke easing up and gave Tunnel View another chance before sunset at it was a lot better. It was nice to look around in the valley and take it a little easier before tomorrows bigger hike.
