The minivan was left parked down at the turnout from the highway, and we proceeded uphill in a stock subaru crosstrek and a lifted 4Runner. With careful driving, the subaru was able to make it a mile or so up the road until conditions became poor and we pulled off in the turnout here: 32°38'02.7"N 116°05'46.6"W. Gear was loaded into the 4Runner and the rest of us proceeded on foot to a car camping spot in the Valley. Navigating the slide was bumpy but doable in low gear.
Snow in the valley that weekend and it was chilly when the wind was blowing, saw wild horses on the way to the climbing! At the patina wall I lead Borderline (10a, 9 bolts) and the 10a next to it whose name I can't remember... The rest of our party toproped while the non-climbers hid from the wind among the rocks. Nice Joshua-tree like rock with plenty of fun flakes and features.
Wild horses came running through camp that night, it was quite the thing to see. |
