From S2, I drove the Pinyon Mt Rd as far as my car could go which was about 5 of the 7 miles to the TH. From there I walked the road in and took a side trip up to Pinyon Peak, walking across its ridge, and then dropping down near the Whale Peak TH. Took the well marked trail to Whale peak enjoying the sweeping view up there & along the way before returning back to the road & back down the road to my car. 
WARNING! Hiking and outdoor related sports can be dangerous. Be responsible and prepare for the trip. Study the area you are entering and plan accordingly.
