On the way to Wildrose, we stopped quickly at the campground to set up a tent and save a spot. We needn't have bothered, since there ended up being only one other group of 2 at the entire site. Oh well, the tent sets up quickly, so no time wasted.
At the trailhead, a long photo session with the charcoal kilns ensued. Meanwhile, I learned that the kilns were only used for 3 years and have been restored twice, which is why they are in such wonderful condition. Walking inside one of the kilns was crazy - you really can smell the smoke even though they were last used in 1879!
On with the hike. The trail quickly meets up with a former miner's road, long since abandoned. Since this first part of the hike was not challenging, I fell into a world of imagining what it was like to be a miner out here. Soon you starting heading up, though, and the views become better and better. The climb is nothing tricky or strenuous until the last mile, so you are able to enjoy the views to the maximum. Once at the top, we encountered only a gentle breeze. Unfortunately, views were restricted by dust/smoke/haze, but on a clear day, you can see both the lowest and highest points in the lower 48 from the peak.
We enjoyed a quick return hike through the pinyon-juniper woodland and headed to camp. Cold, tasty water from a spring at the campground. We sat around a campfire and shared some wine. Day well spent. |
