"We're the battling b*stards of Bataan;
No mama, no papa, no Uncle Sam.
No aunts, no uncles, no cousins, no nieces,
No pills, no planes, no artillery pieces.
And nobody gives a damn.
Nobody gives a damn."

by Frank Hewlett 1942

This year is the 75th anniversary of the Battling B*stards of Bataan’s liberation from the Japanese forces. I considered myself blessed because I have the honor of knowing one of the remaining survivors. I marched for him and thinking about what he must have gone through helped me push myself to the end. I by no means was the fastest….but I reached my goal of finishing.

Well, I did not do this day right, at all! Thought it would be mostly on trails, yet it had quite a few miles on pavement. I initially picked up my pace, easy to do on pavement... which was foolish given that all I've been doing for the last month are snails pace exploratory bouldering hikes! I managed to tear up the bottom of my right foot by mile 8... then got to enjoy the next 18 miles of tortured walking. Now I know. I'll go back next year with this event built into the calendar. I'll even train for it instead of hitting it while I'm still 35 pounds over weight.

Nice challenging course, with an interesting historical emphasis... scenic... well supported. There were a record 5700 people out hiking/running today. Effectively, this is the only day of the year you can access this route, all located on the White Sands Missile Range.
