I know I didn't start at the top, but I don't think I'd classify this one as canyoneering. It's just an off-trail hike in a drainage. It was raining pretty hard while I headed toward the area so I decided stay in the car and keep driving. Since I ended up at the bottom of the canyon where FR 122 meets FR 42, I decided to just hike up from there.

This was a nice exploration. I would have liked to see a little more water running, but was not disappointed with the scenery. It's rugged and remote. Not wanting to retrace my steps, I climbed out of the canyon and made my way back on some old closed double tracks.

Access notes: On the upper end access via Cougar Park is permitted via FR 3108, and a little farther west on FR 122V. On the south side of the upper canyon, FR 728 from Coleman Lake is closed just past Mac Tank. Where I started on the west end, both FR 122 and FR 42 are open to vehicles, but high clearance is an absolute must on 122 (no Subarus!) plus 4WD required on 42, which is a miserable road to drive.

I went about 1.75 miles down and back, but somehow missed the gauging station, or else I don't remember it.

This is an off-trail hike. It starts in a very nice meadow, and there are some old roads and elk trails you can do to make it easier. I turned around where it got brushy and turned into an all out rock hop.

:D This was an anticipated summer revisit to finalize my scouting trip from last fall. My early assessment was dead on. This is a very nice canyon in the late summer. Lots of fresh clear water, and lush vegetation. On this trip I accessed the lower canyon with my mountain bike from old jeep trail that follows the south rim (see map). Using the posted trailhead is a much better package deal, but this option is quicker and more direct if you're somewhat ambitious. The south rim is also a good alternate return route when hiking the entire canyon.

Warning: This is a remote seldom-visited canyon. Black bear and mountain lion frequent the area.

This was a scouting trip during my dad's elk hunt. I've wanted to hike the bottom of Hell Canyon for the last five years. Hell Canyon is always cold and dry in the fall however the potential was glaringly obvious of what this location could be during the prime summer months. Rugged granite cliff faces, deep-water pools, granite pour-over's, and heavy vegetation. This is a cool canyon! I will definitely be coming back next summer with my camera...

Note: Photos are from the posted trailhead and were taken in July 2009
