Big CW loop, north on Little Round Top 17E16 and the PCT to Echo Lake, return via Hawley, Christmas and the TRT. Congestion and ugly burn zone around Highway 50, otherwise splendid mid-Sierra scenery.

I knew I was pushing the envelope by hiking at this altitude this early in the season. The trail was blazed for a while with orange ribbons for cross country skiers. Those soon vanished and so did the trail, in deep snow. Soon I was breaking trail and eventually had to turn back due to post holing up to my waist. Encountered the same on the Hawley Grade Trail and made an attempt on the Big Meadow section of the Tahoe Rim Trail. I was thwarted on all thru attempts and had to retrace my steps which was much easier.
