My PCT - Oregon Section E trip report.
Day 98. Off trail at 2000.9 (21.2)
With a long dry and exposed section ahead, I started out from South Matthieu Lake with 3.5 liters of water. It ended up I could have used more. The trail descended for a bit and entered a large lava field. After 4.1 miles I reached McKenzie pass and the start of this section. There was a short break from the lava field north of McKenzie pass but then the trail was back in it. It was a good climb and was hot and exposed. After the lava field, the trail climbed up through a large burn area. I believe I was a bit under hydrated when I started the day and was going through my water faster than anticipated. Once out of the burn and in the forest I stopped for a break a few miles before the junction to Big Lake Youth Camp. It was getting very hot so I stopped rest in the shade at Santiam Wagon Road. From there I had just shy of two miles to water with 1/2 liter. I decided to drink what I needed along the way and ran out just before the pond with water where I stopped again and drank my fill and ate. From there it was not quite two miles to hwy 20 at Santiam Pass. Once at hwy 20, I tried to hitch to Salem with no luck for over 90 minutes. Several other hikers had successfully hitched the other direction towards Sisters and Bend so I decided to go that way instead. After a few minutes I got a ride with Damien and Mary. They were the best, they took me to Sisters where we played some Disc Golf, then they took me to dinner, followed by letting me shower, do laundry, and stay at there place for the night. The next morning Damien even drove me to the Redmond airport where I had a rental car reserved. The best trail magic ever!
Days 99-102
Off trail for my 40th high school reunion in Seattle area.
Day 103. Camped at 2023.4 (22.5)
I made it back to Sisters, OR yesterday and spent the night at the Sisters Inn & Suites, they have a great hiker deal. This morning I saw Foxworthy while getting breakfast. We last saw eachother in Etna and decided to hitch out to Santiam Pass together. When we were walking to the highway to hitch, a lady pulled over and asked if we needed a ride. It's pretty amazing to get a ride before sticking your thumb out, thanks Cara! We got on the trail around 10:30 or so. Today I hiked past Three Finger Jack and saw my first views of Mount Jefferson. It was a bit smoky so the views weren't as nice as they could have been. Thankfully it wasn't nearly as hot as it was before my break.
Day 104. Camped near 2049.2 (25.8 )
Hiked past Mount Jefferson today. There were some views but through a smoky haze. Forded Russell Creek today where there was a dead horse in it. Russell Creek was the first difficult ford since the Sierra but it wasn't bad when I was there. Later I passed the junction to Russell Lake but I was able to see it as I climbed up to the Mt. Hood Wilderness. That was fun since my name is Russell. Saw a gal, Rumi, that I hadn't seen since the Sierra so that was fun. Also I bumped into two southbounders that I know from Phoenix, Caleb and Jomarie. We both were surprised to see eachother since I thought they got farther south when I was at my reunion and they heard I was farther north. I stopped at Ollallie Lake for a bit and got a soda, a beer, some ice cream, and a cinnamon roll. I was having a tough go of it today. I think the big push to get to Santiam Pass on the 9th for my reunion, then the whirlwind trip for the reunion, finally caught up with me. I had a really tough time keeping pace. The break at the lake really helped and then I stopped a bit early and didn't even make 26 miles (okay, 26 miles is a lot but since I've been pulling 30s on a full day of walking my perspective is a bit skewed).
Day 105. Camped above 2083.8 (34.6)
What a difference a day makes; I felt really good all day. The terrain was easy and the tread was good so I was able to cover some miles. Water was frequent enough too which was nice. Lots of miles were going by Timothy Lake. I was hoping to get 35 miles but I got in some dark timber and decided it would be best to find a place to camp while I could still see. Camped a ways above the trail were things leveled off some. Just before the dark timber, I rounded a bend and had my first great view of Mount Hood; what a great way to end the day!
Day 106. Camped at 2106.7 (22.8 )
I had about 8 miles to the end of this section. The morning started descending to Hwy 26 and had some nice views of Mount Hood. Once I passed Hwy 26, it started to cool off as I started climbing so I put my wind jacket back on. The climb was fairly mild in the forest on good tread. After a short descent I reached Barlow Pass/Hwy 35 but I just continued on by heading to Timberline Lodge. The rest of the day will be covered in my trip report for Oregon Section G.
