Definitely better to attempt this is Spring, Fall or, possibly, even Winter (snow is possible at upper altitudes...). This hike was good because it covered some ground, provided varied terrain and provided trails I hadn't been on before... Scenery wise, it was pretty boring (Sage, Scrub Oak, a few Pine Trees interspersed with Manzanita, Poison Oak and Thistles). My hiking partner and I did spot several deer(first I've seen in So Cal...). Even with a GPS and maps, we managed to miss parts of the trail and had to back-track a couple of times; there isn't much traffic so overgrowth obscured our route in places.
The worse part of the entire hike had to be the last .6 mi back to the TH. It was uphill (30-35 degree slope) in full afternoon sun (90 degrees). The fact I had drained my hydration pouch and couldn't readily reach any water didn't help! Hitting this section later in the afternoon after the sun has sunk below the hills to the South would help, significantly!
The next time I hike to Eagle Crag, I think I'll try one of the other routes (longer distances but trails should be better). |
