Trailhead is well marked and about 20 miles south of Hood River on 35. Only one car in the lot when we started. Didn't see a soul until we had finished lunch. We hiked about 3.5 miles in to the nice rock outcrop with great views of Mt. Hood. Since it was still a little early for lunch, we continued on. About another half mile later, the trail split. Right going downhill or left going up. We tried both for a little bit. The left hand fork turned into what looked like an old forest road. There would have been some good views of Mt. Adams but the clouds had other plans. Met a few bikers on the way out and one other hiking group but overall it was pretty quiet hike. You can hear some road noise from 35 at certain sections, but overall a very enjoyable hike. Best bet is to get out early before the crowds and while the sun is behind you hitting Hood. The picture didn't turn out good but we saw the biggest squirrel ever! I thought it was cat or something else at first because the bushy tail was so big. He was fat, too. But fast enough running down the trail to not afford me a good shot! |
