Hank and I did this hike the day after hiking to Wheeler Peak. We intended to keep this one easy since it was a day of recovery from a strenuous hike. I would describe the hike as a nice walk in the woods with some great mushrooms along the way.

After leaving the TH we blew by the turnoff to Sawmill Park (there was no sign) and went straight ahead toward Horseshoe lake more than a mile before turning back and picking up the correct trail on the way back. We only did about 1/3rd of the Sawmill Park trail before turning back. It was a pleasant hike but not outstanding. There is significance to this hike and trailhead however.

The Forest Ranger we met at the summit of Gold Hill said that her favorite route to Wheeler Peak is from this trailhead. Following the trail to Horseshoe Lake and beyond (the trail is on topo maps) you would then summit from there. Probably there is a use trail that easily goes up. If I ever get back there I would try this route.
