Insomnia

Joel was the only one in our party that had done Insomnia before. We decided to do a different sneak exit then he had done to mix it up a bit.

We loaded up our packs with 4 ropes: 300, 200, 150, and 120 ft. The intent was to be sure to still have rope if we stuck ropes on the big rappel. We wanted to be sure we could finish the canyon.

We bushwhacked down a drainage that was not part of the beta I had. We ended up doing two short rappels in that drainage before we hooked up to the main Insomnia drainage. The first rappel we rigged off a cairn anchor.

In the main drainage we tried to not put in our wetsuits. We went through a 56 degree pool and then decided that we really did need the wetsuits!

Next up was the garbage compactor pool from Star Wars. The smell was worse than a horrendous poop! We each enjoyed watching other people swim through it.

The canyon turned into a beautiful slot canyon. Fluted and sculptured in ways that you can’t imagine. This is why we canyoneer!

Soon we were at the top of the big drop. Tim was at the anchors first and was checking it. He checked the bolts and they were NOT good. The hanger on the left was spinning. The right bolt could almost be pulled out of the wall. I was thinking, ‘No way!’ But unfortunately at this point there isn’t any choice but to do the drop. We communicated back to Joel and Carl and they started looking for another anchor to back up the bolts. They found several options and went with a log. We passed up the longer strand of webbing and soon Joel had it rigged. Things were safer but still it was nerve-racking. I was to go first since I had my full ascending gear on. Gulp! I was happy to have my caving rack along. It handles long rappels by adding a lot of friction. It also doesn’t twist the rope, enabling a spin-free free-hang. I also attached my VT prusik above the rack so that I had an auto block. I looked at Carl, who put his hands in the shape of a heart which was really encouraging, and then I took off. I had to first place some rope protection to prevent the rope from being cut by the edge of the cliff. Then I was off. But not before taking a selfie! The first several feet was against the cliff but soon I was hanging free. As I rappelled a little bug decided to hang with me for a while, keeping pace. Then I saw a butterfly. I kept lowering myself at a steady pace. The full drop is 320 ft. Our rope was only 300 ft. The beta for the canyon mentioned a ledge but I had no idea if it was a tiny ledge or what. I could only hope that the numbers were right and I’d find it easily. Soon I was at a ledge! It was huge and easy to get off rappel safely. I was so jacked up on adrenaline that I jumped up and down and then sat next to the tree that would be our next anchor. I blew my whistle to indicate I was off rope and out of the way. Unfortunately when I got off rope, it swung away from me so Tim didn’t get a fireman’s belay. We are estimating that the drop was probably about 260 feet.

Soon the full crew was down and we continued on our way. Looking back at the full cliff was mind blowing. At the top you could see a keyhole like feature and then just a shear cliff.

We did a few more obstacles and then we were at the sneak exit. We took off our wetsuits and had our lunch. Lunch included some celebratory muffins I had made special for the trip. While baking a work call had come and the muffins spent a little too much time in the oven. I liked to refer to them as really brown. Luckily, the guys were game and ate them.

The climb out was reasonable for the four of us; for the most part it was a scramble up a drainage with all sizes of boulders. Towards the top it got chocked with bushes so we worked our way through locust and other shrubbery. Reaching the top was satisfying, we were done and safe. What a thrilling day!

2nd time thru. Better than I remembered. I only remembered the big rap from my first time. the bolts on the last rap are bad - we backed them up off a big log nearby.

My first time through Insomnia and wow is this canyon fun and amazing! I brought my wetsuit along but never used it. There was very cold water but the ambient air temperature was warm enough and my rain jacket helped contain the warmth. That big rap is a bit terrifying when stepping over the edge! The bolts on the big rap need to be checked out. The right bolt hanger has pulled away from the rock so be aware!!

Great trip down this one. Brooding early monsoons but no rain until after the shuttle back up to the rim. (We enjoyed an epic lightening show and downpour from our camp looking down on Sedona.) Cold water but not unbearable in just a 3ml farmer john. Anchors all in good-fair condition, a few will need new webbing soon. Party of 5 experienced canyoneers, took our time with breaks and enjoying the views. used 330, 200, & 150ft skinny ropes.

Started at the top around 9am with some light rain. It rained pretty steady until we got to the big rap when it started to clear up. Someone was kind enough to leave a hand line down to the anchor for the 320'. Found all the potholes full of water. Walked out Oak Creek under blue skies.

Perfect day in the canyons, couldn't ask for better weather

Pretty nice time of the year for hitting up the canyons in this part of the state. Invited to go along on this trip with some others I knew I was in for a long day but knew it would be worth the effort to go. We camped Friday night along FR 231 near the top of an entrance to Insomnia so we were pretty close and didn't have to hike far to drop in. After 30 minutes of hiking on the top forest and then through some brush down slope we found a cliff to rappel into the canyon and thought it saved us some time.
Once in the canyon it really didn't take too long for it to narrow up which you remain in until the giant drop. Most of the group wore full wetsuits but I chose to wear my shorty which was just fine. The only time I got cold was at the top of the giant drop waiting for the others to go down. A few squats and other weird funny moves to warm up was all I needed. This canyon is quite the challenge and sight. Lost count of how many rappels we did, only ended up with one swimmer which was also the spot my buddy threw a rope to me short and it sank to the bottom of the pool. Luckily it was at a spot 4 feet deep and I could see it so I walked in and grabbed it, bringing up a dead mouse with it. What else is at the bottom of this pool?
Once at the giant drop it was pretty awesome to check my buddy before he went on rappel and take in the view from this awesome opening in the canyon wall. The skies were blue and many clouds filled the sky and I could have sat up there all day long. But it was my time to go. Wow that is a long way down, it is very similar to the rappel at Sundance but once you come off the wall at the top for the free hang you are further away from the wall. Onot the giant ledge and then the finish of the rappel into a nice pool with a giant dead rat in it which found its way onto the rope when it came time to pull it.
After the giant rappel there are still a few rappels left and then you come into the West Fork of Oak Creek. Just amazing to see the formations the water has done over the years. Unlike the canyon treks at WCC you are only in the shallow water for just a bit and then a trail takes you to the end so time in the creek doesn't seem to go on forever. The shuttle process is the only bad thing you can say about this canyon. What a good rush for the weekend.

7 hours to WFOC, 9 hours to Call of the Canyon, and another 4.5 to haul my bulk back up AB Young. Nonstandard entry. Great trip, keepers are all full. Rating an R because of the keeper potential when water is low.

Camped over night on the rim above insomnia canyon. Swimmers were a little cool and 4/3 wetsuit was nice. Caboosed the big drop with no issues. Long hike though the west fork of oak creek, followed by the road walk, followed by the climb up AB Young trail, followed by a 3.6 mile walk back to camp. Saw a very large black bear about a 1/4 mile before the fire look out. The bear was about 50 yds fom me and running away quickly. Carried a big pack on this trip since it was just the two of us with ~700 feet of rope

Hiked up AB Young trail early Sunday morning and made our way down Insomnia Canyon. It was a warm day and this made the cold water more tolerable. Even though I carried a wetsuit, three of us decided to never put them on. We were a little cold after the swimmers, but there was enough sunlight throughout the canyon to warm back up once I put on a windbreaker jacket. Big rap was awesome and there is a nice size mat up there to protect your rope on the 320' drop. I felt very comfortable on the big rap and this is now my 4th big rap (Insomnia twice/Waterholes twice).

It was insanity to do Illusions and Insomnia in one weekend!

Took advantage of another warm October weekend to squeak out one more Mogollon Rim canyon and it's funny how eager canyoneers are to tick this one of their lists when giving the oppurtunity. :D I again wanted to avoid the ridiculously long shuttle drive to the top and hiked up the AB Young trail in the morning. It is nice to camp up there in the cool air when it's 110* back in the valley, but doesn't make much sense when it's flipping freezing. It's that logic that opted us to sleep in our warm beds here in PHX and meet up at 5am and drive up there. Unfortunately it took longer than expected to get 5 canyoneers to the AB young TH :? and we weren't on top and dropping into the main east fork of Insomnia canyon until 11am. That's what I get for trying to cram too many things into our morning. The upper canyon had exploded with Falls colors and I slipped into Tibber-mode and took WAY too many photos of the amAZing colors. Eventually we reached the technical section and we put our game faces on and slipped on our gear. Since I was lugging my 400ft rope up the steep trail and didn't have much room left in my pack, I opted to only take my 3mm shorty since I'd need to beg someone else to take it. Judging by how cold the water was and that the canyon was wetter than last time, I knew I was in for a chilly day esp when I realized that my 5mm neo socks didn't seem to make my pack either. :o Most of the half dozen rappels in the upper narrows are short & sweet, but it was a nice touch to have the pools covered in fall leaves. :) Time flies when you're having fun and it was late afternoon by the time we reached the staging area for the big 320-375ft rappel. ;) Did some jumping jacks to warm my cold fingers and arse back up, before proceeding out to the keyhole perch to setup for the BIG drop into the super scenic amphitheater. Some peeps like to rush down these big drops, but I prefer cruising down slow and in control while soaking in the amAZing views and whoo-hooing at the top of my lungs. :y: Once down, I took photos and gave fireman's belays to others but even with a group of 5 it took almost 2 hours to get us all down. Roped pulled easily like usual from the solid bolts but we still had three more short rappels to go as dusk was setting in. : rambo : Once down them all, we left the helmets on and put headlamps on for another hour of dark rock hopping to the confluence. We were glad that was over and didn't want to get cold & wet again so we rappelled into the confluence with Illusions canyon before dropping the rest of out gear once in West Fork. Well the worst of it was over but we still had to creek hike a half mile or so thru the dark Subway section before hitting another 3 miles of trail before reaching the highway. Thankfully, some faster hikers volunteered to run ahead to fetch the vehicle that was parked two miles down the highway and bring it back to the rest of us while we finished hiking out and sought refuge in the backrooms.

It was quite a LONG day to revisit this rugged canyon, but all were thankful to experience this amAZing canyon before the cold of winter stole her from us again. :D

Met at 5am in Tempe and drove up to the AB Young trailhead. Started hiking at 8:30am up the AB Young with our heavy packs. We then hiked along a dirt road for a while and saw 7 deer. Started the descent into Insomnia Canyon and saw some colorful fall leaves throughout this section. The canyon had about 10 rapells (depending on how much you downclimb). The canyon has some very cold pools that you need to wade or swim through. Most pools are about knee or waist deep and I recall we had two full swimmers. I had a 5mm wetsuit on and I was cold and shivering for the 2nd half of the trip. After trying to stay warm before the 320' rappel, it was time to do the big one! Vaporman got all the ropes set up for the rappel and it was eventually my turn to do the drop. Since this is my biggest rappel by far, I had to concentrate on not making a mistake. After dropping off the edge, I looked down for a few seconds and was pretty impressed on how far I was above the ground. I then just started to slowly descend and concentrated on a safe rappel without looking down. Once I reached the overhang section, I spun around and had an awesome view of the canyon. I finally made it down and my arms/grip was tired. After everyone was down, we had 3 more rappels with stumps/trees as anchors. Then we had to start rock hopping our way back in the dark. When I got to West Fork, I happened to fall into a small crevice in the middle of the creek. I am sure others have made this mistake, but the darkness made me miss the crack!!! After running back on the road to fetch our car, we finally finished this canyon at 10:30pm and made it home by 1:30am.

This was by far the most technical and longest canyon that I have went through. I don't have too much experience and I like to thank Vaporman for the fun and adventurous trip. Thanks to azrocketchick for making sure my rappel equipment was correctly set up throughout the canyon. In the canyon registry, I did not see any people that did this canyon since August, so its a rarely traveled and awesome canyon.

I didn't have anything planned yet for this weekend and it certainly didn't take much begging for Susan to convince me to bring myself and my 400ft rope down this amAZing canyon again this season. This canyon is pretty much all about that HUGE super scenic 320ft rappel, one of the best & airiest in the state that I know of. It's def not for the faint of heart, yet Susan didn't have any problems getting a whole horde of canyoneers on board for this trip. : rambo :

The seven of us drove up Saturday evening, setting up the lower vehicle, and camping up on the rim above the canyon. This time I decided to drop in the main fork instead of the western one and was greeted with a much easier approach since they bushwhacking never got to crazy and even got an additional short narrows or two. :) The upper canyon has many forks and is fairly gentle but eventually it gets down to business with more narrows full of pools, down climbs, and short rappels. Just as the canyon drops into some super sweet narrows, it reaches the BIG rappel and the character of the canyon completely changes as it drops into that HUGE lush amphitheater of colorful sandstone. :y: Having a couple 300ft+ rappels under my belt, I volunteered to go first and set it all up and give fireman belays to the rest while of course taking loads of photos. :) Having a group of 7 understandably slowed us down on this drop, taking about 2 hours for us all to get down to solid ground. Something to keep in mind when taking large groups down BIG rappel sequences. ;) The following rappels & down climbs were now in the Schnebly Sandstone as opposed to the Coconino sandstone up above the big drop. They proved to be some light fun but are soon over and before you know it you're rock hopping and bushwhacking you're way down to the West Fork confluence where we relaxed and dropped gear. After an amAZing day of canyoneering in one of AZ best canyons, it's always SO sweet to exit hike out the beautiful West Fork and her ever-flowing creek and tall colorful sandstone walls. :y:

Maybe I'll spare you guys another photoset since it'll look just like last month's trip.
