Day 3
My Jack Russell and I woke up early and hiked a loop near the campsite. As we returned, the rest of the group started waking up and packing up the campsite. We all left the campsite and headed back toward I-17. When I had cell service, RouteScout led me to Howard Mountain. The pup and I did a 2.7 mile loop up Howard Mountain and back to the truck.

BrunoP
BrunoP wanted to do a warmup hike before our next H hike. Basically all offtrail although there are a few roads you can use. We started from FR700 and headed up... crossed a few roads hopped a fence or two and had snacks on top.

Sweet little hike.

No real trailhead or trail to find, so I parked & started at the closest land marker near FR235, "Tinaja Tank". From there I simply headed east and kept climbing (steeply) till I peaked out. The forest is THICK in this area, so really no views until you reach tippy-top...then stunning views of the Kendrick, San Fran's and Eldon, as well as Sunset and O'Leary. (see photoset) I found the survey marker(s) (actually two up there), took a break and headed back down.

Was memorial day holiday, many campers and ORV's along FR700, FR236 and FR235.

This is a very fine hike and I'm surprised it's not that well known...add to you list!!

Howard Mountain is a small peak a few miles southeast of Mountainaire south of Flagstaff. Elevation is 7654. There isn't a trail that I'm aware of that goes to the summit, but you can drive to about .5 miles from the summit. But the road is rough and I have a passenger car so I parked about 2 miles away from the summit along the road.

The hike is off trail, and is very secluded and moderately steep and a lot of fun. This was my second trip up to the summit, last one was about 3 months ago. In both instances, I've seen a single elk right at the summit. Kind of a strange coincidence. In both cases, they looked right at me for more than a minute before deciding to run off. The summit has a completely 100% unobstructed view to the north, which provides one of the best views in the area of the SF Peaks with Elden framed in the foreground. Ran the 1.5 mi back to my car because I was short on daylight. Recommended if you're in the area and are comfortable being off trail during a short summit hike.
