| no partners | | I prefer to go on hikes to indian ruins unescorted, at our own pace,in our own time. usually its quieter and the experience is enhanced. In the case of Ute Mountain Tribal Park this was an exception. you need reservations and meet a guide to escort you to the ruins. In the case of the porcupine house this means a 20 mile drive into the reservation some of it 4WD and although we were prepared for a longer hike it turned out we drove within spitting distance of the canyon. On the way in we stopped to view some cave paintings and pictographs. Our guide was an UTE indian and was better educated in this days subject than any guide I've ever experienced. not only the ruins and paintings but he gave us an incredible education on social aspects of the UTE indians as well as quite a bit of their history. Porcupine house has not been excavated of stabilized and still has many artifacts laying around (corn cobs, pottery shards) but the most incredible one was an intact yucca woven sandal that our guide brought out from his secret hiding place. There are other sites that can be visited on scheduled trips or you can make arrangements for a private trip. I've been to quite a few Indian ruins thruout the southwest but this one was unique and I am looking forward to a return trip to a different ruin in the area. Many of the other hikes require much longer hikes, some even originate in Mesa Verde NP and pass onto the reservation. Enjoy the pics, they will say more than I can write |
