This hike is the Flatiron of the Wasatch Mountains. Easy access (the parking area is literally right off the road, with ample parking and restroom facilities). The trailhead is also the base of a sheer crag that is popular with the rock climbing crowd.

The trail gains a little over 700 ft, in mile 1; 800 ft. in mile 2; then 1300 in mile 3; and 1400 in the last 3/4 mile to the summit, which involves a Four Peaks-ish scrambly chute. Add to all of that a covering of 1-2 feet of snow and ice, and let the adventure begin!

The first mile and a half are a little ho hum on scenery, especially with the sounds of traffic on the nearby I-215 rising up the slopes. But then, you turn into the drainage and by mile 2, where we crossed the stream/creek (rock hop), the sounds of the city were left behind and the beauty of this trail opens up. As does the throttle on the elevation gain, which to this point had been solid but basically doubles in intensity from there on up.

about 1/4 mile past the stream crossing, we donned our spikes, which were essential for the conditions on the day.

At mile 3.5, we reached the saddle at the apex of the drainage, which pops out to the first dramatic views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Covered with snow, the sight was amazing--and a worthy destination in and of itself.

For a few adventurous souls (#raisedhand), the real fun then began with a scramble up to the summit. It was very steep and there were a couple of spots where a slip would not have turned out well. Luckily, the spikes worked their magic, and before long we crested a short, knife-edged ridge for the final ramp to the summit.

360 views, including the Wasatch range, plus the Great Salt Lake, Kennecott copper mine, and everything else in the area, were majestic. We had the summit to ourselves! :y:

The scramble back down the chute was more precarious than the climb up. Once we passed the uber steep section and were nearly back to the saddle, I got cocky and then slipped twice in a row (even with the spikes). By then, the sun was warming up the snow, which gave the spikes a little less purchase. No worries, it wasn't too steep then, and only ended up bruising my pride a bit.

We kept the spikes on till reaching the creek crossing on the return. From there, we cruised to the TH.

Highly recommend this one!

First Hike of the 2012 year! David and I were late to the trailhead, as we had planned to meet with a group of friends. We came across many other hikers and trailrunners but never encountered expected people from our party :-(

The trail was very dry in many places, and of course in the permanently shaded areas there was slick ice, which we prepared for and brought our Kahtoola micro-spikes ;-) There were a few groups that only made it so far up due to their lack of gear, it wasn't terrible coming up on ice but heading down the trail can be a disaster w/o the right gear... We made it to the saddle, scrambled up some class 3/4 portions to the summit and took a break to rest and capture photos at the top. There was snow and ice on the top but not as much as there normally would be this time of the year.

this was our last hiking day in utah and we wanted to get a good one in. we also knew the storm was coming and likely early. preston found this one: huge climb for distance with promise of awesome views and some fun scrambling...seemed perfect.

the hike starts off (and stays) incredibly steep. soon enough the open section fades as you disappear into Tolcats canyon and you enter the maples... :FG:

the conifers follow. we were loving it by now. it was cloudy, windy, pretty cool/cold and i was sweating buckets from the incline. that's a rough combo.

all was forgotten as we hit the ridge and the spectacular views that followed. after ooohing and ahhing we began the final summit scramble. this was a fun class 3 climb and the weather kind of mellowed out for this part. we hit the summit and marvelled at the great views...yep definitely a good choice for the last day. during our time on the summit the temps dropped noticably, the wind picked up and we started getting COLD. we could also see the rain coming. we got down quickly before those summit rocks got wet, had a snack then begin the steep descent. within mintutes full rain gear was on for most of the rest of the hike, the wind really picked up too. despite getting rained on, we were more than happy to get the peak in and an awesome last hike before the storm and having to head home

finished the day with wendy's chile and a long visit to rei :y:

drove home the next morning, through about 200 miles of snow in central utah before it finally cleared up :scared:

absolutely AWESOME trip!!!!!!!!!!!

For our final hike we chose Mount Olympus, a massive rockpile rising straight up from the edge of Salt Lake City. The climb never let up, neither did the views and colorful maples. At the saddle below the peak we were greeted with a rugged mountain scene, complete with cliffs and numerous peaks above treeline. Very nice! Winter storm clouds were fast approaching, so we scrambled quickly up a fun rocky section to the summit. The view was incredible. SLC folks surely are lucky to have such a special playground in the Wasatch. We took photos and video, then began our descent as the first few raindrops arrived. Snowflurries began to float over the peaks and the temperature dropped. Nick and I hiked down in a steady light rain, which despite my dislike for inclement weather, did not detract from the experience at all. We had successfully completed the three hikes we had set out to do, and had had a wonderful time. Who could ask for more? :) The rain had ceased and the sun peeked out by the time we reached the trailhead, where we changed into dry clothes. The afternoon was capped off by great chili at Wenchys and a visit to Salt Lake's massive REI. A perfect day and a perfect trip! :D
