After spending only 30 minutes MAX on the "Little Falls" trail, I wanted to get the most out of the day and the hour-long drive up to Mt. Charleston. Fearing a downpour from the building clouds, I knew it would have to be another short hike. Robbers Roost was just that, short and sweet. At the trailhead I learned that Robbers' Roost cave was used by horse thieves as a hideout back in 1885, until cattle rustling became profitable. Apparently they would rob travelers on the old Mormon Road (a trail from Utah that went through Vegas to get to California).

Once inside the cave, I can totally understand how it was a good hideout back in the day. Today it is obvious that it is a well-used trail. We found lots of broken glass, which made me extra cautious of my hand placements when climbing in the cave. We also ran into some rock-climbers. It looked like a good time, I'd love to try it one day (but my clumsy self would certainly require knee pads, elbow pads, and a helmet at the very least)!

With the thunder rolling louder, we figured it was time to hit the road. I was surprised the rock-climbers weren't calling it a day too! We enjoyed the cool mid 70s temps and the rain on the way home. Nothing beats an hour drive that drops the temp down 30 degrees and goes from desert to pines.

Went on this short hike with my parents while they were visiting. Although we got hailed on, we were able to take shelter under the robber's roost, and all was good. With the precip, the footing over the larger rocks was a bit slick at times.
