Fun in the Black Hills sun!
Clockwise loop through the desert 1st half, finished on the old Duncan-Safford Highway 2nd half.
Such a cool scenic area, looks like an old spaghetti western movie scene.
Cold at the start, warm at the finish.
Wildflowers are coming in good, a few patches of poppies and several water tanks with cattle.
We finished a bit early so decided to make it a daily double with a trip out to Hot Well Dunes.

We drove the 25 miles out on Haekel Road which is always an adventure on that road.
Made it to the dunes with about an hour to spend.
Made a quick hike up to an overlook in the sand followed by a visit to the hot tubs (2) where we visited with some friendly folks before leaving.
Headed back home to Safford via Tanque Road which is also an adventurous road.
Lot's of poppies seen on this road out.

We had a fun full day!
:D

Another great trip out to the good ol' Black Hills to hike the loop trail I discovered a few months ago south of Hwy 191. This whole area to me looks like the backdrop of an old western movie and I just love it! Hiked the loop clockwise and was treated to great sloping desert views with a butte/pinnacle around every bend. Along the way were many stock tanks, cattle, corrals and even the remains of an old Ford model T (I think) beside the old Hwy 70 road. The only thing missing on this trip were the rattlesnakes, gila monsters & tarantulas which I'm sure will be out soon. There were also many nice patches of poppies throughout to keep my camera finger busy! A huge trophy white-tail buck was the big wildlife sighting of the day right at the end of the hike as the sun was setting.

I have always been fascinated with the Black Hills while driving through them on my travels to Morenci & Duncan. There are no real hiking trails in the hills so I had to make my own using Google Earth. I discovered that by combining the Old West Hwy 70 (closed for 40+ years) and a jeep trail, it would make for a nice loop in the heart of the Southwestern portion of the Black Hills. This one turned out to be an absolute home run! Both the jeep trail & the old Hwy were in great shape, the old Hwy still has most of it's surface left, and the loop's scenery of the hills and beyond just blew me away! There will be many, many more hikes for me along (and off) this trail in the near future. Definitely one of my top 5 hikes of the Year!

The only bummer of this hike was the very overcast skies, I took a little over 300 pics and none really captured the awesome scenery I saw. :(
