Had an open weekend, so decided to head north a little ways and check out the Hogan trail. Figured there wouldn't be much left of it, and I was right. The map has the trail going up the drainage to the saddle, but we headed straight up to the ridge, which seemed like it would be more clear. There were some large cairns up there, so I think that's the way to go.

After the fence, we dropped down the west side and headed down the valley until things started getting a little boring. The first quarter mile or so was prickly, but once in the wash, the going was easier.

Not much to see in this part of the canyon. Guessing it will probably get more interesting further down, below Goat Camp spring area.

I found myself on this obscure trail in search of a ruin Larry had found on satellite imagery last spring. It turned out to be one of my more involved approaches for a ruin in a long time.

I approached the Hogan Springs Trail from Cave Creek Road and started off from a little campsite just past FR602. I then walked up Holmes Canyon. I alternated some sections of old road/trail, with walking down the middle of the drainage. I linked up with FR 602 just past Renner Spring and then took another well traveled ORV road to the "trailhead" for Hogan Springs, which has no standing signage, register, or informational kiosk. The trail still has good tread and is not overgrown in the beginning, but it eventually becomes engulfed in catclaw after the fence and gate. I walked the creek bed for most of my approach and only used the actual trail a few times.

The final approach to the ruins was a bit of a slog. I gained just under 1,000 feet in about three-quarters of a mile. For most of the approach and since it came in to sight, the prominent butte that held the ruins, looked almost inaccessible with steep cliffs guarding three sides of it. A small break on the backside and a little scramble eventually solved the ruin's defenses. The ruins were your run of the mill rock piles, but the views were exceptional and offered some pretty unique perspectives with the Four Peaks far off in the east and the Bradshaws and Perry Mesa to the west. I descended a different way back to the creek and then began the boulder hop back to single tread, the road and then the old road/wash back to the car. I was more efficient in my return and hit more trail in the benches along Hogan Springs and Holmes and the going seemed to go a little easier, despite my fatigued legs. An additional ruin find on the way back kept the spirits high and offset the tired legs some as well.

I feel like its been awhile since I thrashed through catclaw and chased some obscure rock piles, nice to know I still enjoy it.

Came in from the west end of trail 8. A few pools of water in the creeks.

Bob's raisins tasted nasty. :yuck:

Back at the TH we saw a cowboy going in with 1 horse and two loaded up mules.

What do Ben Hogan,Hulk Hogan, and Bob Crane all have in common?
None of them would want this trail named after them.

I researched the "trail" and only found a blurb from the 2006 AZ Republic. So my next inclination was to message my friend from across The Pond. Of course he had been there...Did I really need to ask the question?. He said he was there in the 1980's and it was a lovely faint trail filled with catsclaw.

I said goodbye to my 107 pound pouting baby pup and I was off. The drive into the sun was not very pleasant. I arrived at the TH about an hour off schedule..due to oversleeping.
I decided not to drive fr 602 and opted to go up the drainage and then up to the road. It was a little cooler in the drainage in the am. I then bushwacked over to cut off some of the trail and road which on the way back I decided to stay on the road... and the trail was actually nice there( the only nice part).

The area is pretty cool if you can overlook the catsclaw...Its hard to avoid unless you're in the creek bed which I stayed in sometimes for miles.Goat Spring Camp is decent...moving along. On the way to Six bar ranch, I came across a corral with hay and a bunch of firewood maybe setting up an Easter petting zoo and bonfire.

The trip over to Hogan Cabin was almost worth the blood loss. Its pretty cool and there is also a trail which also was a 4wd road(faint for about 1/4 mile) probably back in the Model T days. Hogan also had a spring which was pretty weak compared of some of the others.

Parts of the middle fork of Squaw Creek were my favorite. It was like I blinked and was transformed to Wet Beaver Creek. I also checked out Jack's Gulch on the return....yawn. All in all, I'd go back with Firehose pants and much cooler weather. Maybe in another 30 years.

Third time here. We were going to try to get to Six Bar ranch having only got part way there once. The other time we went to Lime Creek falls.
We parked and got ready to go and then I decided to move the SUV to another spot. Lucky I did. When I tried I had a dead battery ](*,)

We walked out on 602 to 24 and flagged down a couple of vehicles to see if anyone had jump leads. The first guy to stop was a USGS worker who had been out collecting seismic data from some sites nearby :-k

He said he would help but didn't have any jump leads. The next guy had some leads that he said we could borrow and return to his home in Tempe... :thanx:

The USGS guy then took me back up 602 we started up the SUV and drove home via Pep Boys... :)
