With the two western fork of Mesquite Creek named Damocles & Dionysis, I thought I'd stick with the Greek mythology theme and name this Prometheus canyon after seeing a movie trailer from one of my fav directors. We hiked that dirt road again to get above the many forks of Mesquite. I decided to drop into the fork I have geo-tagged after seeing a plunge pool in sat photos where it hits the main fork. This side fork started looking very promising when it turned V-shaped and dropped quickly. Some stemming and a couple down climbing and we were stopped by some rappels. The first was about a 50ft drop into a rocky alcove and another 20ft rappel took us into a chest-high wader. That put us into the confluence with the main fork and that quickly opened up and became more of a creek walk with some bushes and pools to navigate thru but nothing too challenging... It was plenty scenic and sunny walking thru the yellow beehive shaped rock though. The walls were lowering but just before we popped out to the main Mesquite Creek, the canyon took a quick turn into some short lower narrows. Though an awkward down climb and stemming or wading some pools was all it took to get thru. Once out, we walked the main rocky creek downstream a bit to the parking lot. Only noon?!? We'll have to do another halfday canyon in the area. |
