I took a few days to visit friends in NYC and went to my old stomping grounds in Lordville, NY for the last two days of my trip to see my dad. I spend some time at Indian Springs Flyfishing Camp chatting with the flyfishermen and then later at the bar with the podunk drunks (the podrunks). I love this area, but being a guy who doesn't fish and only hunts animals with a camera and not a gun makes me a bit of an outcast.

When the word gets around that I look for snakes as a hobby, the locals come up to me, and in a friendly way, brag about how many snakes they've killed over the years. I countered by bragging how many bald eagles that I've killed over the years and inform them that there's a black market for eagle beaks and talons in Asia.

As for the wildlife seen, I saw more of the same: a porcupine (botched photo ), 9 timber rattlesnakes, 3 bald eagles, deer, et al. I missed seeing a black bear that walked thru the front yard and saw my first gray tree frog in Pa.

Mission: Operation Black & Tan

Participates: gummo (that's me), my dad, and occasionally the dogs

Regions covered: Montane, woodland, grasslands, and riparian areas

Target Species: Timber Rattlesnakes (listed as a Threatened Species in NY)

Mood: Mantastic!

Synopsis: I took the dad out to find rattlesnakes, so he can observe them in their natural habitat and add to his photo collection.

Reason: To influence the locals not to kill rattlesnakes by showing them, thru photography, that they are pretty sweet and to promote conservation and my dad's fly fishing and river rafting business.

Other species seen: 13 bald eagles, a green heron, a porcupine, a skunk that was seen chasing the dog, deers (spelled with an "S" because there were so many), water fowl, a female ruff grouse (state bird of PA), a large black rat snake, 2 garter snakes, a ring-neck snake, a baby milk snake, a red fox, and a red-tailed hawk.

Song: Daddy Never Understood by Deluxx Folk Implosion (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mswcDUhOkNE)

Philosophy: "God didn't put animals on this earth for us to make them extinct."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abstract:
I re-visited my old stomping grounds to find timber rattlesnakes. I wanted to have my dad involved so he can show the photos to his clients and friends and tell them that rattlesnakes are not so bad. Despite the fact that they are a protected species, people regularly kill them in large numbers.

Results:
We photographed 11 of the 12 rattlesnakes (4 yellow phased, 7 black phased, and 1 unknown) and found one possible den site. Since they are a protected species, we stayed at a respectable distance and tried not to disturb them. Most of the rattlesnakes were about 3 to 4ft long. No baby snakes were found and all but few rattled upon approach.

Conclusion:
Timber rattlesnakes are sexy, and it's perfectly okay to cheat on your boyfriend if he doesn't like snakes.

Future Endeavors:
Re-visit the den site to count how many individuals in mid-May/late April of 2013 and to attend Pennsylvania's Annual Rattlesnake Festival.
