It's been a few years, 10 to be exact.
What a perfect desert hike for a chilly February day!
Scenic views up the eastern Pinalenos, old homestead ruins, colorful rocks at the small mine, dove, quail, rabbits, hawks, coyotes, cattle and the main reason I came ... lots of secret boulders with pictures on them 8)
Cool area, rewarding day.
:D

Back out at the P Ranch mine to search for more petroglyphs & habitation sites around the area I found 10 days earlier. After visiting the mine, I off-trailed all around Stockton wash looking for sites but found nothing new on this trip. There was a 40% chance of rain today and it 100% hit the area half way into my hike. The crazy afternoon weather started with a partly cloudy sky, then a couple claps of thunder, then light rain, then light snow, then back to light rain and then clearing up and ended with a perfect rainbow from one end of the valley to the other ..... all in 2 hours!
Also, I saw the first small patch of poppies for the season on an eastern hillside hiking back.

This afternoon trip was just to be a quick uneventful hike up to the mine and back but became more! I made it up to the mine in no time and spent about 20 minutes exploring the small site before heading back. Sat on an overlook before crossing back over Stockton Wash and glassed for a bit spotted some big dark boulders to the south that I thought could hold petroglyphs. Made my way off-trail through a thick prickly pear forest down to the boulders and POW! ....... Petroglyphs on almost every boulder! The Safford basin in not known to have many of these petroglyph sites and I doubt many have seen these. I then followed the ridge along the wash now looking for the habitation sites that I thought must be nearby and think I may have found a large Hohokam community site! Light was now starting to get low so I returned back to the ranch now knowing that a return trip will be made very soon to explore more of these most unexpected finds!!!

Today was another get on Google Earth, find something & hike to it! I have been out to the P Ranch about a dozen times but never knew about the mine above it and just had to see it. Parked at the ranch and hiked up the road a couple hundred yards to first view the old ranch ruins. Next it was a short walk across the desert to hook up with the dirt road that heads up towards the base of the eastern Pinalenos. I then crossed through the forest boundry gate and headed up the mine road. Another mile or so and I located a faint spur road that led me down to the small mine along a rock wall. Explored the area for a short while before turning around and returning back the way I came. Great weather & a new find made this a very worthwhile trip!
