Bob led me up into Hansenland in search of sherds and rocks. Apparently this was a wish list thing that I didn't know about and I got to put faces to a couple of familiar HAZ names. We set off from a convenient parking area to make our way toward the ridge.

Temps had dropped into the 20s on the drive in but recovered to a balmy 35 on the initial climb. Cloudiness and a steady breeze assured that I would remain clad in my poofy, beanie and gloves for all but a few minutes a couple of times all day.

We are all accustomed to doing our own thing, but did a poor job communicating with each other and ended up taking different routes and goals. Amy's friend John had her visiting a some random reds and blues, while I was in it for the historic artifacts and Bob was glassing for deer. Peter split the difference.

Cloudy days are delightful and far too rare around here, so I find it difficult to complain, so I will simply state the verifiable fact: it was cold. The views along this route were way better than expected, and I was able to set eyes on a few more intriguing goals in this part of the world. Time to make some plans...

Bob and I took a side trip to an unnamed peak with nice views down into Middle Fork. A large reflective area sure looked like water, but by all logic had to be bedrock or something else, because there can't possibly be water out there right now.

A quick road walk back to the cars completed an enjoyable day. It was great to meet Peter and Amy and to get better acquainted with this part of the world.

I got a text from Peter about doing this hike. In 2011, I hiked from the Cave creek side to Hogan's cabin. I liked the area except for the catclaw. I remember reading hansenaz's triplog a couple years after that and I decided I needed to check out the area a little more. It was cold at the start, middle, and end. It seemed like there were a few times it warmed up but for the most part I wanted to keep moving to stay warm. Road walks and off trail was the main thrust of the hike. The off trail wasn't bad except when we cut the roadbacks. All in all a good day with nice views. Good to see Peter again after a decade +. Talked with Amy for awhile on the road start, and then didn't see her the rest of the day. Thanks for driving Chums!

I've looked at this inviting ridge from several angles recently: from the west on the flats of Perry Mesa http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=307916, and from the east on top of Hutch Mesa http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=301856. I thought it would make a good hike because there is an "easy on-ramp" from the Rosalie (NW) side and after finishing at Brooklyn Peak a jeep road can bring you back.

From I-17 I took Bloody Basin Rd. 11 mi to the small kiosk, turned right and went 2.5 mi, then left. The road is not bad for a high clearance vehicle, and I went ~1.2 mi further before parking and heading off east toward the ridge. I had to wend my way through the low bushes and catsclaw and it was like that most of the day - not terrible but not fast moving either.

Gaining the first highpoint (5561) sets the tone for the day: some steep bushwacking and some barb wire fence dodging. The fence runs almost the entire ridgeline. But the views of the mesa are great and you get the impression not many people travel here. Plenty of deer (and cows) do though; I saw three white-tails.

After 5561 is a noticeable drop and a pretty steep climb to the highpoint of the day (5648). And after that another drop and short steep pull to the top of Brooklyn Peak (5371).

There were summit cairns but I didn't see any registers. In a couple spots I saw a few pot sherds, but no convincing habitation areas.

A steep drop off of Brooklyn Pk. hits a jeep road which goes back to the car. It makes a pleasant change after the slower ridge travel.

This is a nice line and would make a good hike if it had an established trail. Without that trail a little less so.

Hiked along FR 481 and trail 257 to Hogan Tank No. 1 and then took the old road up to the saddle and off trail to Brooklyn Peak. You can return the same way or what we did is continue on the sketchy old road to the north east and then back over the crest to Rosalie Spr and back down the FR 481. The loop route is a bit overgrown.
