we packed up our camp at crane flat early and hit the road into yosemite valley
parked at the tunnel and hiked up to inspiration point on the pohono trail
extremely smoky this day, limiting views
a good hike anyway
next hit the very short trail to bridal veil fall
still flowing due to abundance of snow this year
made one stop across from el capitan and walked down to the river
we saw a doe with two fawns and a very nice view of el cap
parked at yosemite valley lodge where we would be staying the next two nights
did the easy loop to lower yosemite fall, also flowing well
jumped on the shuttle to mirror lake trailhead
there were a lot of gnats on this hike but we did the full loop anyway
back on the shuttle for lunch at the grill in the village, then checked into the lodge
ended up going back out to tunnel view close to sunset
photo ops were much better with less smoke
fun day doing most of the easy valley hikes
totally touristy for our first visit to the park
this was kind of a plan b since glacier point road was closed due to fire

Today was a day for plan B. Glacier Point Road was closed due to the fire crews staging there. We hit a some easier stuff in the valley instead. This was the most smoke haze we had seen so far. The morning Views of the Yosemite Valley were bad. Other views we got to see like the falls and such were not as bad. For sure better then the pics let on... It was nice to see some of the Yosemite Valley landmarks for the first time. We noticed the smoke easing up and gave Tunnel View another chance before sunset at it was a lot better. It was nice to look around in the valley and take it a little easier before tomorrows bigger hike.

Lizard and I decided to brave Walmart because she wanted to get a picture of Half Dome from Mirror Lake. I saw WAAAAAAAAY better lakes the entire time I hiked in Yosemite. This was more of a bog-like body of water. We kept going past the lake where everyone stopped and followed the river for a while looking for a place to cross. Didn't happen, too much water!

It was our last day in Yosemite, so I wanted to check out more of the valley. I went on a quick, easy trail run up to Mirror Lake (completely dry), to the Ahwahnee Lodge and around Yosemite Village on the Valley Loop Trail.

After outdoing my health the day before on too much elevation gain, I decided to take it easy and just do a little stroll to Mirror Lake. The signs and maps all say the trail is about a mile (one-way) and mostly flat, on a paved road. I could handle that.

Sure enough, I made it interesting again! I chose to hike the trail which parallels the road, just for the variety it offers. I'm not really a fan of paved trails. So after the mile, I arrived at the lake (two lakes actually) and took some photos. It's a beautiful flat valley, and the cliffs rising on either side are impressive (North Dome and Half Dome respectively). The green grass and foliage really sets this place apart.

Not content with just a mile, I decided to follow some use-paths along the creek, and before I knew it had probably hiked farther beyond the lake than I had to get there.

I know there was a loop trail, but it had been closed in 2009 due to a rock slide (it was well marked, even on the printed maps), so I knew there was no point in bailing out to that trail. But there should be a bridge crossing the creek at the east end of the old loop. That was my goal, but eventually the use trails dissipated into nothing, and I was doing some heavy bushwacking.

I did stumble upon a nice deer, who didn't seem to mind I had arrived, at least for a while, which was a nice encounter.

Eventually, I was able to find an area of deadfall that allowed me to get across the creek dry. (I could have crossed anywhere if I wanted to get wet. It was rarely more than waist deep, and usually not more than 20 feet wide).

Alas, upon crossing, I intersected with the well-maintained north side of the Mirror Lake Loop trail, which is used to access the Snow Creek Trail which leads up the north side of the valley up to Olmstead Point.

So the return trip was easy and uneventful, and as with the day before, many, many more people out enjoying the views. It seems that early mornings are the time for solitude in Yosemite!
