36 weeks of pre-planned training. Sounds like failure in the making!
I could just head out the door, enjoy a hike or bike ride, and there
would be no potential for "failure"... no goal= no potential of goal
not attained. Yet, I find the pattern of working towards the
potential defined by a goal to be a motivator for getting out the
door. Occasionally, the planned patterns yield some pleasantly
surprising results. More often than not, the goal is missed... but
all of those days out and about are still just as pleasingly vested.
I'll likely stick with the pattern of setting seasonal goals.
Hike this morning was good. I headed out in 40 degree weather...
finally clear after a night of freezing rain and hail. As I walked
down the forest road I checked out a big pile of native stone. As my
loads of cordwood hauling were drawing to a close, I considered
picking up some rock for foundation use... and here was a great big
pile ready to be loaded.
A secondary thought passed through my mind... WHY... was there a pile of rock?
I walked over... and sure enough... it was blocking an old logging
road! I climbed around the pile and headed out on yet another
exploratory hike. The road did not last a great long time, but it
wound around to a well established elk trail... which lead down and
around into a canyon that I'd looked at hiking last month... but it
had been too overgrown from the top. Now, entering half way down the
drainage, the way was clear. I enjoyed a very remote trek down into
the lower basin then looped back around up Thousand Mile Canyon trail.
I watched my pulse rate and kept it within the boundaries defined for
this week's training.
Good outing.
Next, I hopped in the truck and headed down hill... hauling the load
of wood I'd cut the day before. Halfway to the Village I had a
blowout on the trailer. Pulled over... put on my spare tire...
In the village I was driving around trying to find air for the spare
(it had all of 15#!) when I passed an old guy (older than me!!)
pulled off to the side with a flat on his trailer... I pulled over and
put his spare on for him... then found air at a local garage... and
headed down to Alamo... just one mile shy of Big O tire... the spare
tire blew! I unhooked the trailer... stopped over at the tire store
for a new tire, then retraced my path back to the trailer, hooked it
back up... and replaced my third flat tire for the day!
On the way home I stopped off at the tire store, bought a second new
tire to give myself a matching set... and replaced the spare with the
good looking one from the original trailer pair.
Finally Home... I unloaded the tons of wood... filled up a big glass
with ice, poured in some lemonade and here I sit, playing on the
computer. I've got stuff to do, but after all this unplanned labor,
I'm thinking about plopping down and rewatching the second season of
"Justified"... a couple of hours in the AC, zoning out on low key
hillbilly humor might hit the spot about now.
I'll drive back up the hill tomorrow... time to relocate my camp a few miles over and prepare for the next six weeks of high altitude hiking. Lots more new trails to explore! I need to be in shape for hiking Wheeler Peak by early October! |
