| no partners | | Hiked two new trails today. One dull, one nice...
Thousand Mile Trail... North Sacramento Trail...
It was interesting to be feeling fingers stiff from the cold, here on a summer time hike. I'd awoken an hour earlier down in the valley, drove the 40 miles up to the top, and was on the trail before 6am. I only spotted a few elk on the drive across. Normally, I'd see big herds that time of the morning, crossing the Sunspot Hiway. I spotted only a few slo-elk on the trail. The hike was more of an auditory experience today.
Swoosh..Swoosh..Swoosh of a Raven gliding down and around the trees.
Barking and Bugling of a lone Bull Elk...
Tap.it...Tap..it...Tap..it of an industrious wood pecker...
...assorted bird song...
...and, the trail was just dull. Too open... too flat... power lines overhead, hiway beside, of last half of downhill section. It would make an okay traverse off the hill on a Mountain Bike... beyond that, I will not be back.
Now, the Second outing was just the opposite. Same Forest Road 64 departure to the west, dropping down to the Sunspot Hiway, but this one was close, intimate...and steeper. It was much like walking through a tunnel of green. Tricky footing on the upper section, but okay. This is a trail worth revisiting... I'll be back time and again.
Walked up on a solo elk... then a pair... inspired a turkey to shuffle off into the trees. It was very, very nice. I got a good workout hit on the way back up to the truck.
Though the official trailheads will orient from the lower end down on Sunspot Hiway, I prefer to access from the top off of FR64.
Now, I need to change clothing and cut a cord of firewood.
It is very different to be adding a 100 miles of driving into my daily hike, after a year and a half of not even driving to a trailhead. $30 cost added to the day... ideally offset by the $100 of cordwood I haul back down the hill each trip.
It is a different year! |
