Made the drive down to Chandler for a return visit to Veterans Oasis Park. I had a cloudy and humid walk through the area though the sun did break through a little toward the end of my visit. The cloudy skies did make for some tricky lighting situations when it came time to take photos. However I managed to get some decent pics.

My wife wanted to see jackrabbits. She's not from AZ and had never seen one before. Boy, was she in for a treat. This park is Jackrabbit Central. We also did some birding. A very patient roadrunner being the highlight of the day. He was perched on a pole, cooing like a dove. We snapped away with our cameras until he tired of us and began chasing two Curve-billed Thrashers around a cactus. I think he was after their nest, but came up empty-beaked.

Explore with the dogs...saw lots of birds ( Ducks, cormorants, kites, geese, herons (6-7 of them), assorted smaller birds) and large hordes of jackrabbits ( not an good thing with 4 dogs!). Great place close to home :y:

First visit to the park and I was impressed!
Lots of birds, jack rabbits and Christmas morning family's enjoying the park.
IMO this park has a little more to offer then the Gilbert Riparian Preserve.
I will go back!

Joined my son and some cub scouts on a hike around the ponds and were impressed with this park. Saw a ton of birds, including water birds, swallows, a pair of hawks, and a covey of the fattest quail I've ever seen. The highlight was seeing a roadrunner. All over the park were lots of jackrabbits and a few cottontails. Some areas had nests for burrowing owls and signs marking those areas as off-limits. I noticed that there were less trees and therefore no feral cats, unlike Gilbert's Riparian. This made visibility of birds a lot better too. The man-made hills were a nice feature, but some parts of them looked like the sun had scorched the plants in the past. The running river looked great from a distance but we didn't get close because a crew was doing a project there. The scouts enjoyed looking at some stations about the planets and their distances from each other.

Jochal had a triplog on this a while back that piqued my interest so I took a trip over there this morning. It's like the Gilbert Riparian Preserve but replace the feral cats with jackrabbits. I decided to create a hike description for possible future visits.

Finally got to Veterans Oasis Park, a popular birding area and little know jackrabbit farm. The jackrabbits are seriously everywhere.

Really nice place. If the Gilbert Riparian Preserve is a desert riparian area, this is a little more desert oasis. Very pleasant.

Yes, there are burrowing owls, but they are very hard to see.
