The hike is mostly along an old logging road which descends from the trailhead down to the small grove, which then veers off into a figure 8 loop tour of the area and the giant trees. In addition to the impressive, living trees, the grove includes one toppled sequoia, whose center is hollowed out and allows hikers to climb through the "guts" of the dead tree. Kind of a neat experience. In addition, there is a stump of one of the old giants, into which the early loggers cut out a tunnel large enough for cars to pass through. An interpretive display at the trailhead shows a model cut out of a sequoia, noting that its early years probably coincided with the construction of the Roman Coluseum. |
